Three-Goal Hole Is Too Big To Climb Out Of

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (10/02/13)—A three-goal hole in a span of 14:24 in the first half proved too big and Concordia lost 4-1 at Augsburg on Wednesday.

The Cobbers survived an early-game attack from the Auggies, settled into the game and had a pair of chances of their own before Augsburg struck for three goals in less than 15 minutes. The first chance for Concordia came on a play from the wing and senior forward Brett Wegleitner finished off a cross from Alex Cyusa. Unfortunately for CC, Wegleitner was flagged for offside. The second chance came from a corner kick and Justin Flack's shot went wide.

Augsburg started the trio of goals on a deflection at the top of the Cobber penalty area. The ball ricocheted between players and finally caromed to a wide open Auggie attacker who placed the ball in the top right corner. The second goal came after a pair of corner kicks. The second corner was cleared to the top of the box where Lekpea Kordah scored the first of his two goals. Kordah's second goal came on a shot from 25 yards out. The ball was deflected by a Cobber defender and rolled into the net.

The Auggies added a fourth goal in the 69th minute of play before Concordia got on the board at 88:33. Freshman Matthew Fulks was able to break free down the left wing and serve a ball into the penalty area. Wegleitner ran on to the ball at the back post and one-timed it into the back of the net. It was Wegleitner's team-leading fifth goal and 11th point of the season. For Fulks it was his team-leading second assist on the season.

Augsburg outshot Concordia 17-11 in total shots but only 9-8 in shots on goal. Peter Runquist made five saves in the game. The Auggies split their goalkeeping duties. Clayton Lynch made one save in the first half and Nick Lenertz stopped six shots in the second period.

Concordia returns to action when they host St. Mary's on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. at Fargo Shanley HS. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex but an impending cold wave has forced the change in venue.
