Reversal Of Fortune Leads To OT Loss At Augustana

AUGUSTANA, Ill. (10/07/12)—It was a reversal of fortune for Concordia on Sunday at Augustana (Ill.). Four days after giving up a second-half equalizer and then winning 2-1 in the first overtime period, the Cobbers scored the game-tying goal in the second period but then gave up the winner in the first extra overtime and fell 2-1.

Concordia allowed a pair of goalmouth scramble goals and lost in their second straight overtime game. It was also only the second overtime game of the season for the Cobbers. CC is now 5-7-0 on the year. The Vikings are now unbeaten in their last three games and move to 5-5-2.

The Cobbers had most of their quality chances in the second half. After allowing a goal in the 36th minute of play, Concordia made adjustments  at the break and controlled the second 45 minutes of play. Their changed offensive attack paid off less than 10 minutes into the half. CC junior forward Kristian Reiersgord headed the ball onto the foot of wing Jannick Bettels 45 yards out from goal. Bettels then dribbled into the Augustana end and delivered a crossing pass to Michael Forston who ran on to the ball and knocked home the game-tying goal. It was Forston's third goal of the season.

The game would remain deadlocked at 1-1 until the ninth minute of the first extra period. Once again the Cobbers were unable to clear the ball from their penalty area after a service from a corner kick and Matt Shipon poked home the game winner at 98:47.

The Vikings held a slight 11-10 edge in shots on goal for the game. CC goalie Peter Runquist was credited with eight saves while Augustana goalie Brett Johnson stopped nine shots.

Concordia will remain in Illinois and play at Elmhurst College on Monday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m.
