Extra Point Slips Away In Overtime

ST. PAUL, Minn. (12/01/23)---A goal in the fourth minute of overtime kept Concordia from earning an extra point in the MIAC standings in their series opener at Hamline.

The Cobbers and Pipers skated to a 2-2 through 60 minutes of regulation hockey before Hamline won the game with a breakaway goal at 3:39 of the period of 3-on-3 hockey.

Concordia earned a single point in the standings for an overtime loss and now has two points after three games in the conference standings. CC is 5-2-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the MIAC. Hamline moves to 4-6-0 in all compeitions and 2-3-0 for seven points in league play.

After a scoreless first period, sophomore Joe Harguindeguy opened the scoring with an even-strength goal at 8:41 of the second frame. Cole Lehmann and Tal Halliday recorded the helpers on Harguindeguy's second goal of the year.

Hamline would tie the game less than 3:30 later and then take the lead in the eighth minute of the third period.

The game looked like it would end in regulation, but then Caden Triggs answered the Cobbers and netted the game-tying goal with 4:02 left in the period. The goal was Trigg's team-leading fourth of the season and his ninth total point, which is also a team best. Hunter Olson and Liam Haslam picked up the assists on the equalizer. For Haslam, it was his team-leading sixth assist of the season.

Concordia controlled the puck for the majority of the first two minutes and had the best chance of the OT before the game winner. Cole O'Connell got free on the right wing just inside the HU blueline and went free toward the Piper goal on a partial breakaway. He snapped off a shot that was labeled for the far corner, but the Hamline goalie was able to get his right pad on the shot.

The Cobbers outshot the Pipers in all three periods in regulation and finished with a 40-27 advantage for the game. Harguindeguy led all players with five shots in the game.

Freshman netminder Dane Couture made 24 saves for Concordia.

Neither team was able to score on the power play. CC was 0-for-3 and held HU scoreless in their two attempts with the man advantage.
