An Undefeated Weekend Against No.9 Aurora

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/28/23)---Concordia remained unbeaten on the season as they battled to a 2-2 overtime tie with No.9-ranked Aurora in the series finale on Saturday.

The Cobbers trailed for only 5:30 in the entire series against the nationally-ranked Spartans. Concordia never trailed in the opener on Friday night in a 4-1 win and then trailed briefly in the second period on Saturday.

The teams skated through a scoreless opening period, with a combined nine shots on goal.

The score line changed in the sixth minute of the second period when Aurora got out to its first lead of the weekend at the 5:42 mark.

The lead would last until 11:12 when junior Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe 1-timed a shot from the slot on the power play. Mason Plante and Joe Harguindeguy set up the game-tying goal. Harguindeguy and Plante would also factor in the second goal for CC.

Concordia grabbed a 2-1 lead when Harguindeguy netted his first goal of the year at 3:24 of the third frame. Plante and Jack Westlund got the helpers to push CC to the 1-goal lead.

The Cobbers tightened their defense for the next 8 minutes as they tried to lock down the series sweep, but the Spartans were able to get the equalizer on a seeing-eye shot from the point. Aurora's goal at 11:26 would finish off the scoring and send the teams to their first tie of the year.

Concordia had the exact same lineup in both games of the series, and goalie Matt Fitzgerald was solid in both games. He made 22 saves on Saturday and finished the weekend by stopping 42 of the 45 shots he faced.

UP NEXT: The Cobbers will host a pair of non-conference games next weekend. CC will face Northland on Friday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. and match up with UW-Superior on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.
