2-Sided Cobbers Gain Sweep Over Pipers

MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/02/22)---On Friday it was the offense that carried the Cobbers to a 6-3 win in the series opener against Hamline. On Saturday, junior goalie Aaron Dickstein led a stifling defense that allowed Concordia to post a 2-1 victory and grab a sweep in the key MIAC series.

Dickstein didn't allow a goal until the final 13-seconds of the third period as he helped the Cobbers record their first sweep of the season.

The win evens Concordia's records for the season. The Cobbers are now 4-4-1 overall and 2-2-0 in the MIAC. The six league points in the two games takes CC from the basement of the conference standings into seventh place. Concordia also has two games in hand against five of the six teams ahead of them in the standings.

The Cobbers started slowly on Saturday as they gave up the first seven shots in the first period. The biggest key to the win may have come midway through the opening period when Concordia was able to kill off a 5-on-3 power play for almost a full minute.

Concordia used the momentum gained from their penalty killers to start their offensive attack which was rewarded in the final minute of the period. Sophomore Hunter Olson sniped home his first goal of the season when he 1-timed a shot off the inside of the left post from just inside the top of the right faceoff circle.

Kevin Ness and Cole Lehmann did the work along the boards to set up the opening goal of the game at the 19:25 mark.

The second period was a stalemate as neither team scored and both squads had 12 shots on goal.

Hamline started to press offensively in the third period to try and get the game-tying goal, while the Cobbers were content to lock down their defensive zone.

The game appeared to be headed for a 1-0 score line, but then freshman Ben Luedtke took a pass from Jack Westlund at the top of the left faceoff circle and then fired a shot that snuck between the pads of the Hamline goalie and trickled into the net.

The goal was Luedtke's second of the season. Braden Costello was also given an assist on the insurance strike at 15:06.

Concordia had to hold off a late surge from the Pipers and almost had the shutout for Dickstein, but a shot from a close angle on the left wing finally got HU on the board at the 19:47 mark.

The Cobbers held a slim 26-25 edge in shots on goal. Defenseman Liam Haslam led all players with six shots in the game.

Dickstein capped off his second win of the season by stopping 24 of the 25 shots he faced.

Neither team was able to take advantage of their power play chances. The Cobbers were 0-for-4 and held Hamline scoreless in their six PP attempts.

UP NEXT: Concordia will have an extended break and finally return to action when they travel to Illinois to take on Aurora on Dec. 30-31.
