Two-Goal, 121-Second Hole Is Too Much At Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (1/23/15)--- A pair of goals 2:01 apart at the end of the first period proved to be the difference in Concordia's 4-2 loss at Augsburg. The Cobbers couldn't dig out of the two-goal hole and lost for the first time on four games.

The loss keeps Concordia winless in their last three conference road games and moves them into a tie for first place with the Auggies and St. Thomas. CC is now 9-6-3 overall and 4-3-2 in league play. Augsburg jumps to an even 8-8 in all games and 5-2-0 in the MIAC.

The biggest goal of the pair of late-period tallies came with only 9-seconds remaining in the opening frame. Concordia fell behind by two goals when they allowed a goal at the 19:51 mark of the first period.

Augsburg would once again score in the final minute of a period when they added to their lead at the 19:11 mark of the second period. Cobber senior Rylan Henley threw Concordia a lifeline when he scored his third goal of the season just 15-seconds before the end of the middle period. The goal came 34-seconds after the Auggies grabbed a 3-0 lead and gave the Cobbers some momentum heading into the final 20 minutes of play. Fellow senior defensemen Charlie Aus earned the first of his two points on the night when he was credited with the assist on the play.

Aus would get Concordia within one goal midway through the third period. He scored an even-strength goal at 9:43 to pull CC closer at 3-2. A pair of freshmen assisted on Aus' first goal of the year. Jon Grebosky continued his torrid scoring streak and Zach Doerring picked up his third point in the last three games. Grebosky has now posted at least one point in five of the last six games and has 15 total points on the year.

Unfortunately for the Cobbers the game-tying goal was never to be found and less than five minutes later Augsburg regained the two-goal margin with an even-strength goal of their own at the 13:50 mark.

Concordia had one last flurry in the final minutes of play but a shot by senior Andrew Deters beat the goalie but clanged off the pipe and slid away from goal.

The Cobbers were outshot 27-25 in the game but held a 19-13 edge after a sluggish first period. Senior defenseman Jared Maetche had a team-high four shots on goal in the game.

Sophomore goalie Jordyn Kaufer turned aside 23 shots in goal for Concordia.

Neither team was able to score on the power play. Concordia went 0-for-2 in their man-advantage situations while the Auggies failed to scores on their only PP chance of the game. There were only three penalties called in the game.

The same two teams will square off tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at the Ed Saugestad Ice Arena on the campus of Augsburg.
