Cobbers Can't Pull Away And Settle For A Point

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. (12/06/14)—Concordia had a pair of one-goal leads erased in the first and second periods and skated to a 2-2 overtime tie at St. Thomas. The Cobbers lost 2-0 in the shootout and came away with a single point on the weekend.

Concordia took a 1-0 lead at the 2:20 mark of the first period only to have the Tommies respond 2:45 later and then scored at 6:18 of the second stanza to grab a 2-1 lead only to have UST respond with a goal 5:24 later to tie the game at 2-2.

The Cobbers finish off the 2014 calendar year portion the MIAC schedule with a 2-2-2 mark. CC is currently tied for third place in the league standings. Concordia is now 6-4-3 overall. St. Thomas moves to 3-1-2 in the conference and 4-3-3 overall.

Concordia had a decided 45-33 edge in shots on goal as the teams raced up and down the ice. CC outshot UST 16-12 in the first period and then 13-7 in the final frame. The Cobbers also put up six shots in overtime but were never able to get the all-important third goal of the game.

Both teams scored a single goal on the power play and were both 1-for-4 on man-advantage situations in the game.

Junior captain Tucker Coborn had the team's first goal in the opening period. He scored his second goal of the season with the assist going to Jeremy Johnson. It would be the first f two assists on the day for Johnson.

Cobber team-leading scorer Garrett Hendrickson put the team up 2-1 in the seventh minute of play in the second period. Hendrickson notched his fourth goal of the year with Johnson and Jordie Bancroft earning the assists. Hendrickson now has 14 points on the year while Bancroft is one point behind with 13 points on the season.

Concordia wasn't able to convert on either of their first two shootout attempts. St. Thomas earned the extra point in the MIAC standings by netting both of their first two shootout shots.

Hendrickson led Concordia in shots for the game. He had three shots on goal in each of the first and second periods and finished with a career-high nine shots on goal.

Jordyn Kaufer got his fifth start in goal for the Cobbers and stopped 31 of the 33 shots he faced.

The Cobbers will have one more game before the first of the year. Concordia will host Northland on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m.
