Another Back-To-Back Goal Nightmare vs. The NCHA

SUPERIOR, Wis. (11/21/12)—Concordia gave up a pair of goals 32-seconds apart in the third period and lost 4-3 to No.13-ranked UW-Superior. The Cobber and Yellowjackets were locked in a back-and-forth battle before Superior scored the two game-changing goals starting at the 5:53 mark.

Both teams scored single goals in the first and second periods. The Yellowjackets got on the board in the first five minutes of the game before Danil Kalashnikov tied the game at 10:16 of the opening frame. Kalashnikov's first collegiate goal was assisted by Derek Whitehill and Adam Wiertzema.

Special teams would once again play a role in the outcome of the game. Superior's opening goal in the first period came when Concordia was on the power play and then the Yellowjacket's second goal came on the power play at 2:34 of the second period. The Cobbers' would get their own power play goal in the third period but wound up going 1-for-5 on the man-advantage situations.

Concordia (3-5-1) tied the game in the second period when Chris Beede continued his recent hot streak. Beede scored an unassisted even-strength goal at 5:49 of the middle frame. It was the third straight game Beede has notched at least one goal and he now has four on the season in the team's first nine games.

The decisive 32-second period of the game came just over five minutes into the final period. Superior scored at the 5:53 mark and then again at 6:25. Both goals were even-strength tallies. It marks the second straight game against an NCHA opponent that CC has allowed back-to-back goals in under a span of 35 seconds and wound up losing by a single score. The Cobbers fell 4-3 against UW-Stout on Nov. 3 after allowing two goals in just nine seconds.

Jordie Bancroft brought the Cobbers to within one goal of the Yellowjackets with under five minutes to play in the third period. Bancroft's power play goal at 15:44 of the third period was his team-leading fifth of the season. Caleb Suderman earned his second assist of the season on the score. Bancroft has now scored three goals in the last two games and has four total points in the last four games.

Concordia had a pair of shots stopped by Superior goalie Drew Strandberg in the final four minutes of play but could never get a sustained offensive attack going late in the game after being whistled for an interference penalty at 17:12.

UW-Superior (7-2-0) outshot the Cobbers 33-18 for the game. Both teams had one power play goal while Concordia was whistled for eight penalties as compared to only six for the Yellowjackets.

Concordia split the goaltending duties in the game. Kelly Andrew got the start, played the first 46:25 and made 25 saves. Chris Neamonitis finished off the final 13:35 and stopped four shots. Strandberg went the distance for UWS and made 15 saves to earn his fifth win of the year.

Concordia has a nine-day break before returning to conference play with a big two-game series at No.11-ranked St. Thomas on Friday, Nov. 30 and Saturday, Dec. 1. The Cobbers beat the nationally-ranked Tommies 3-1 in a non-conference game on Nov. 2
