Papachek And Cobbers Save Their Best For Last

COON RAPIDS, Minn. (10/06/14)—Concordia saved their best for last at the MIAC Championship Meet. The Cobbers, who were in eighth place entering the third day of competition, posted their lowest single day total at the conference meet since 2007 and jumped all the way to fifth place in the final team standings.

Concordia senior Coy Papachek proved to be the driving force behind the team's Monday success. Papachek led the team with a 2-under 70 and finished in third place in the individual standings. Papachek, who was the last player on the course for CC, came to the 18th hole with the Cobbers tied with Augsburg for fifth place in the team standings. He calmly parred the final hole and watched as the Auggie golfer double bogeyed the hole to give Concordia fifth place in the final team standings.

Papachek's third round score of 70 helped him post a three-day total of 222. He was only two shots out of second and five behind the individual medalist.  Papachek's third -place finish is his highest ever finish at the MIAC Championship Meet. His previous best finish came in 2012 when he shot a 234 and placed 15th in the final standings. His previous low score at Bunker Hills came last season when he carded a three-round total of 231.

Papachek's final total of 222 is one shot better than teammate Landon Poss second-place score of 223 from last year's conference tourney. It is the lowest total shot by a Cobber golfer since Andrew Whitchurch captured medalist honors in 2010 with a 215.

The third-place finish also gives Papachek MIAC All-Conference honors for the first time in his career.

The four other Cobber golfers at the conference meet also fired their best round of the tournament on Monday. Senior Sam Christian saved his best for last by shooting a 76 and finishing with a final total of 233 (80-77-76) which was good for a tie for 14th place.

Sophomore Cade Montplaisir bested his previous low score at the tournament by six shots when he carded a 2-over 74 in the third round. He finished with a tournament total of 235 (80-81-74). His 74 on the final day pushed him from a tie for 30th place to a tie for the No.22 spot in the final standings.

Poss battled to overcome an opening round 84 by posting identical 77's in the second and third rounds and came home with a total of 238. Poss had his streak of two straight All-Conference finished come to an end as he finished in a tie for 31st place.

Alex Koopmeiners rounded out the tournament team for the Cobbers. He shot a 79 on Monday which was four shots better than his 83 from Sunday. His total of 247 (85-83-79) placed him in a tie for 43rd place on the tournament leaderboard.
