WDAY Radio Expands Cobber Coverage

MOORHEAD, Minn. (7/20/17)--- A year after partnering with WDAY radio to air Concordia football games, Athletic Director Jeff Bretherton announced that the area’s oldest radio station will expand its coverage of Cobber athletics to include all the MIAC games for the men’s and women’s  basketball.

The new contract is a three-year deal between Concordia athletics and WDAY and will keep the Cobbers on the local radio station through the 2019-20 athletic calendar.

“To be able to continue to grow our coverage with WDAY is a tremendous opportunity,” said Bretherton. “The commitment they have made to Concordia athletics will help the entire college have a great media presence in the area.”

The expanded coverage for Concordia athletics includes 20 conference men’s basketball games and 18 women’s basketball games. In addition to the live game broadcasts, the coverage will also feature weekly coaches’ shows for Cobber football coach Terry Horan, men’s basketball coach Grant Hemmingsen and women’s basketball coach Jessica Rahman as well as appearances by other Cobber head coaches throughout the September to March coverage period.

The total coverage for Concordia on WDAY radio for the 2017-18 athletic season will increase by 38 games. The Cobbers had all 10 football games broadcast on the area’s top AM station and will now see that total rise to 48 games between football and basketball.

“WDAY radio is thrilled to be adding more coverage of Cobber athletics in the coming years,” stated WDAY radio director Mike Kapel. “Concordia has great programs and great support in the community. Cobber students, parents, faculty and alumni - both locally and nationally - will be able to access high quality Cobber athletics broadcasts for years to come with this new deal.”

WDAY radio, which started in 1922, can be found at 970 on the AM dial and is owned by Forum Communications. WDAY's signal covers west central Minnesota, the eastern half of North Dakota, northeastern South Dakota and southern Manitoba.

In addition to being able to listen to games live on WDAY 970 AM, fans will be able to listen to all the games via the WDAY website located at www.wday.com.  The website will also feature increased coverage of Cobber athletics as promotional spots to advertise upcoming games and events.

“I am very pleased with the partnership between Concordia and WDAY,” added Bretherton. “To continue to grow the relationship with everyone at WDAY was one of the first things I wanted to take care of since starting the position in June.”

Concordia Hall of Fame broadcaster Larry Knutson will continue to do the play-by-play for all the radio broadcasts of football and basketball on WDAY. Knutson will be starting his 36th season as voiced of the Cobbers.

The first WDAY broadcast of Concordia athletics will be on Saturday, Sept. 2 when the Cobber football team plays at Nebraska Wesleyan. Concordia will then host six-time national champion Wis.-Whitewater on Sept. 9. Both broadcasts will start at 12:30 p.m. with a 30-minute pre-game show leading up to the 1 p.m. kickoff time.

The premiere broadcast of Cobber basketball will air on Saturday, Nov. 25 when the Concordia men’s team plays at Augsburg at 1 p.m.
