Scheels Cobber Athletes Of The Week

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/29/16)—A pair of seniors spent their Thanksgiving break several states away from Concordia and were named to All-Tournament Teams to earn this week’s Scheels Cobber Athlete of the Week honors.

Cobber men’s hockey defenseman Jordan Krebsbach and women’s basketball forward Jenna Januschka both earned All-Tournament honors as their teams played away from the Fargo-Moorhead area for the holiday weekend. Krebsbach helped Concordia beat No.11-ranked Plattsburgh State in the PrimeLink Shootout in New York while Januschka was a key factor in Concordia going 2-1 on the week and splitting a pair of games at the Rocky Mountain Classic in Colorado.

Scheels is once again pleased to sponsor the Cobber Athletes of the Week award.  Each week the Concordia sports information department will choose a deserving Cobber male and female athlete of the week.

MEN’S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
JORDAN KREBSBACH – Sr., Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS
Concordia headed to New York with a huge target on its back and Jordan Krebsbach made sure the Cobbers were equal to the test. Concordia became the only team from the west to win the prestigious PrimeLink Shootout Tournament in 2014 and returned to prove that it wasn’t a fluke. The Cobbers drew host No.11-ranked Plattsburgh State in the semifinals and proceeded to come up with another eastern upset as they downed the Cardinals 4-3.

Krebsbach scored the game-tying goal midway through the second period and then helped the Cobber defense shut down Plattsburgh for the final 20 minutes of play.

In the championship game on Saturday against No.13-ranked Norwich, Krebsbach led the team in shots from his spot on the blue line. He fired four shots on goal in CC’s 3-0 loss to the Cadets and was invaluable on the penalty kill unit as Concordia killed off five of the Cadets six power play opportunities.

Krebsbach was one of six players selected to the PrimeLink Shootout All-Tournament Team. He will now look to continue his recent success when the team heads back into MIAC play at St. Mary’s on Friday and Saturday.

WOMEN’S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
JENNA JANUSCHKA, Sr., St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS
The Cobbers won two of their three games on Thanksgiving and senior Jenna Janushcka was in the middle of the team’s offensive and defensive effort the entire week. Januschka averaged team highs in points and rebounds as Concordia beat St. Scholastica and The Ozarks (Ark.) and lost to unbeaten Elmhurst (Ill.)

Januschka started the week by warming up against the Saints. She netted 10 points and hauled down six rebounds in the team’s 60-47 home win. Januschka then took her game to Colorado College where CC participated in the Rocky Mountain Classic. In the semifinal game against the Eagles she scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the Cobbers’ 69-52 victory. She went 6-for-10 from the floor and 5-for-7 from the free throw line in recording her first double-double of the season. In the championship game on Saturday Januschka went 5-for-8 from both the floor and foul stripe and finished with a team-high 15 points. She also had a team-high seven rebounds against the Bluejays.

For the week Januschka averaged 14.0 points and 8.3 rebounds and came away with five steals and four assists. She will look to get Concordia off to a winning start in conference play when the Cobbers play at Gustavus on Wednesday, Nov. 30 in the league opener.
