Scheels Cobber Athletes Of The Week

MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/01/15)--- Unlike the feast at the annual Thanksgiving dinner where there was a huge selection of choices, the opportunities for Scheels Cobber Athlete of the Week performances were limited due to the number of games during the holiday week.

Even though there wasn’t a lot of quantity there was still a lot of Cobber quality as all three Cobber teams in action posted victories.

Concordia men’s basketball player Dylan Alderman and women’s hockey forward Jess Nelson were selected as this week’s Cobber Scheels Athletes of the Week as both juniors had milestone games over the holiday weekend.

Scheels is pleased to congratulate the Cobber Athletes of the Week award winners. Each week the Concordia sports information department will choose a deserving Cobber male and female athlete of the week.

Scheels has been a longtime supporter of Concordia athletics and is excited to continue their showcasing of the great passion that Cobber athletes bring to the game. Like Cobber athletes, Scheels has a long tradition of quality commitment to athletics. The first Scheels store was opened in 1902 and throughout the years the company has backed local athletic programs. Today, Scheels is a 25-store operation with stores in 10 states and was recently voted the best sporting goods store by Sports Illustrated Kids magazine.

MEN’S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
DYLAN ALDERMAN – Jr. (Fargo, N.D./Fargo Shanley HS)
Dylan Alderman earned his athlete of the week award for his ability to share during the holiday season.

Alderman put up assist numbers in the Cobbers’ win over Crown that hadn’t been recorded in 13 years. Alderman came away with 10 assists against the Knights which marked the first time since 2002 that a Concordia player had recorded a double-digit assist total.

Alderman had 10 assists to go along with five points and one rebound. His assist total ended a streak of 333 games for Concordia without a player posting a double-digit assist total. The last player to have more than nine dimes in a game was Robbie Flint when he accomplished the feat back in 2002. Flint had 11 helpers vs. St. John’s on Feb. 13, 2002.

WOMEN’S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
JESS NELSON – Jr. (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North HS)
Jess Nelson recorded her first career hat trick in the Cobber women’s hockey team’s 5-2 win over Marian on Saturday. Included in the three goals was the game winner which she scored at 19:21 of the second period.

All three of Nelson’s goals were highlight reel material as she used her sharpshooting skills to beat the Sabres goalie.

Nelson’s scoring outburst almost equaled her total for the first two seasons of her college career. She entered her junior season with only four career goals. Nelson now has four goals and three assists on the year for seven total points. She is second on the team in both goals scored and total points. Nelson's single-season career high point total is 11 which she posted last season.
