SAAC Hosts Special Olympics Coaching Clinic

SAAC Hosts Special Olympics Coaching Clinic

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/26/15)—The Concordia College Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) continued their strong partnership with the Fargo Area Special Olympics by helping basketball coaches prepare for the upcoming season.

The Concordia SAAC group, who usually work directly with Special Olympics athletes, was contacted by Fargo Area Special Olympics athletic director Laura Lake about the opportunity of holding a one-day coaching clinic to help the Special Olympic basketball coaches get prepared for their season.

The 90-minute session was held on Jan. 4 at Agassiz Middle School in Fargo, N.D. The Cobber SAAC group had six Concordia basketball student /athletes paired with roughly 20 Special Olympic coaches.  The Cobbers ran through various shooting, passing and ball handling drills while the coaches watched, took notes, asked questions and even participated in certain drills.

The coaches were excited about having the chance to learn more about the game so they could incorporate the drills and techniques into their coaching throughout the season. They were grateful for the knowledge gained in the clinic so they could pass it along to the Special Olympic athletes throughout the season.

The Concordia student/athletes enjoyed the chance to run the clinic and are excited for the chance to hold similar opportunities in the future.
