41-Point Avalanche Leads To Second Straight Win

ST. PAUL, Minn. (11/06/21)---Ty Moser's interception in the first quarter released an avalanche of points for the Cobbers in their 41-7 win at Hamline.

Concordia trailed 7-0 in the opening period of play, when Moser stepped in front of a pass, made the interception and then raced 21 yards down to the Piper 8-yard line. The Cobbers scored on the very next play which was the first six points of their 41 unanswered points to finish the game.

The win gives Concordia sole possession of second place in the Skyline Division in the MIAC. The Cobbers are now 4-5 overall, 3-4 in the MIAC and 3-1 in divisional play. Hamline falls to 3-6 overall and 1-6 in the MIAC.  

In the end, the Cobbers outgained Hamline 380-175, but the final three quarters was even more in Concordia's favor. In the final 45 minutes of play, CC outscored the Pipers 34-0 and held a 366-66 advantage in total offensive yards.

Concordia scored five touchdowns on the day, four of which came from the arm of senior quarterback Tanner Dubois. Dubois connected with a pair of freshmen in the second quarter. Adam Tonsfeldt caught an 8-yard TD pass to give CC a 14-7 lead, and then Owen Miller latched on to a 9-yard scoring throw. It was Tonsfeldt's first collegiate touchdown.               

Jackson Haire caught his first college touchdown to start the second-half scoring. Dubois found Haire in the end zone from 2-yards out that gave CC a 27-7 lead.

Zach Wolf caught the longest scoring aerial of the day. He went 34 yards to the end zone to complete Dubois' quartet of TD passes.

Senior running back Ben Hoggarth capped Concordia's 41-point avalanche when he scored on a 4-yard run. It was his team-leading seventh score of the year.

Hoggarth had a game-high 22 carries and gained 76 yards. Peyton Mortenson rushed eight times for 60 yards.

Dubois finished the game by going 16-for-24 and passing for 191 yards. He also rushed five times for 33 yards.

Wolf and Miller both had three receptions on the day. Wolf caught three passes for 67 yards, while Miller had three grabs for 21 yards.  

Cobber freshman kicker Damien Silus had another double-digit scoring day. He was 2-for-2 on field goals and made all five extra points to finish with 11 points. He now has a team-best 58 points which is seventh most in the MIAC.

Concordia's offense didn't have a turnover in the game and has only had one turnover in the last three games. The Cobber defense forced two turnovers. Besides the Moser interception in the first quarter, Marshall King recovered a fumble off of a punt return in the second quarter.

King and Noah Jenson led the Cobber defense with 7.0 total tackles. Jenson also added a pair of tackles for a loss, including CC's only sack of the day. Rob Lestrick had 5.0 total tackles and a team-high 2.5 tackles for a loss.  

UP NEXT: Concordia will finish off the 2021 season when they host Gustavus in an MIAC Championship Week game on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. The Cobbers finished second in the Skyline Division while the Gusties were runners-up in the Northwoods Division.
