Berg is one of only six juniors on the two preseason All-American defensive teams handed out by D3football.com. He is also one of four MIAC players who made either the two offensive, defensive or special teams squads.

Berg had a breakout season in 2016 as the mainstay of the Concordia defense from his inside linebacker position. He became the youngest player in Cobber history to earn D3football.com All-Region honors.

Berg led the team in total tackles, solo tackles and assisted tackles for the season. He was also tied for the team lead in interceptions and second in sacks. Berg finished the year with 94 total tackles which reflected 40 solo tackles and 54 assisted tackles. He also came away with 2.5 sacks and 2 interceptions.

Berg's defensive success carried over to the MIAC leaderboard where he led the conference in total tackles, tackles per game and was in the Top 20 of the conference in seven different statistical categories.

Alex Berg had at least eight tackles in seven of the Cobbers' 10 games and recorded double-digit tackle totals on four occasions. His top game of the year came against Gustavus where he had 16 total tackles, 2.0 tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks.

Berg will be counted on to help the Cobbers return to the Top 3 of the MIAC. Concordia has placed in the Top 3 of the league for five straight seasons and has amassed at least seven overall wins in five straight campaigns.

Concordia will start the 2017 with a pair of tough non-conference tilts. The Cobbers open the year at Nebraska Wesleyan on Sept. 2 before returning home to host six-time national champion Wis.-Whitewater on Sept. 9 at 1 p.m.
