Cobbers Trade Multiple-Run Innings With The Comets

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/25/24)---The Cobbers traded multiple-run innings with Mayville State in a wind, non-conference game on Thursday. Unfortunately for the Cobbers, the Comets posted the final crooked number and dealt Concordia a 6-5 loss.

The game was the first non-conference contest for the Cobbers since Mar. 15. CC is now 11-20 in all games this season, while Mayville St. finishes off their season with a 12-37.

The game was played with a wind blowing in from center field that featured gusts from 25-35 mph. The Comets were able to get on the board first with a 2-run homer down the left-field line in the second inning.

Mayville St. pushed the lead to 3-0 before CC opened their tab with a 2-spot in the bottom of the third. Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe drove in the first run when he used his speed to beat out an infield single. Freshman Ben Shumansky brought the Cobbers within one with a double to left center that plated Henkemeyer-Howe.

Concordia grabbed its first lead of the game in the fifth when they scored a trio of runs. David Dorsey started the rally with a run-scoring double. Shumansky gave CC a 4-3 lead with a fielder's choice ground ball that scored Dorsey. Drew Dorsey drew a bases-loaded walk and the Cobbers had a 2-run lead at 5-3.

The Comets answered Concordia's 3-run fifth with a 3-run inning of their own. They were able to close out the score line with decisive runs in the seventh inning.

Concordia had six hits in the game with David Dorsey collecting the only multiple-hit game. He went 2-for-5 and has now had more than one hit in two straight games, three of the last five and six of the past 12.

The Top 5 in the CC batting order had all six hits with Shumansky, Henkemeyer-Howe, Caiden Kjelstrom and Thomas Horan recording the other base knocks.

The Cobbers used four hurlers in the non-conference game. Ben Trutwin went the first 2.1 innings and handed the ball to Dylan Erholtz who went 2.2 innings. Ethan Beyer pitched in the sixth and seventh frames while Brett Engelmeyer closed out the eighth and ninth.
