One Pitching Gem To Another

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (3/02/18)---It was a case of good news, bad news for senior Jack Hiedeman in his first career start. The good news was that Hiedeman had some of his best stuff in his college career and only allowed three hits and one earned run over 5.0 innings. The bad news is that Hiedeman ran up against a pitcher who came up with his career game and shut down the Concordia offense for a full nine innings.

The Cobbers were unable to get to Milwaukee School of Engineering starter Michael Boehmer and lost 4-1. Concordia outhit the Raiders 7-5 on the day but went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and 0-for-9 with two outs in an inning and lost for the fourth time in Florida.

Concordia is now 1-5 on their spring trip while MSOE improves to 4-3.

Hiedeman only ran into trouble in the second inning when he allowed two runs on one hit. However, both runs in the inning were unearned after the Raider's second hitter of the frame reached on an error.

Hiedeman's only earned run of the day came in the fifth when he hit the leadoff batter and the runner scored on a two-out single.

The Cobbers lone run in the game came in the eighth inning courtesy of a leadoff single from Nate Sillerud and then a one-out ground out from Grant Toivonen which scored Sillerud after he advance to second on a sacrifice and then got to third on a passed ball.

Nate Hoeft was the only Concordia batter with more than one hit in the game. He went 2-for-4 from the No.2 spot in the order.

Sophomore Dylan Olsonawski saw his first action in Florida on the mound as he followed Hiedeman. Olsonawski went 1.2 innings and allowed two hits and struck out two.

Adam Nibaur and Kyle Knaeble closed out the game and didn't concede a run in the back half of the seventh and eighth innings.

NATE NEWS: Senior Nate Leintz continues to lead the Cobbers in hitting in Florida. Leintz is now hitting .458 after six games. Unfortunately for Leintz he had his five-game hitting streak come to an end vs. MSOE. Leintz was 0-for-4 on the day. Leintz has 11 hits on the year and has collected three of the team's five extra-base knocks on the year.

JOHNSON JOTS: Senior Chad Johnson has reach base safely in all six games in Florida. He has six hits and two walks on the trip.

STELLAR SEVENTH: The seventh inning has been kind to the Cobber offense in Florida. CC has scored nine runs in the seventh inning of their six games. That is the highest run production in any inning this season. The next highest is the third where they have scored five innings.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will start a stretch of six games in four days to finish off their Florida tour when they square off against Gwynned-Mercy (Pa.) in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 3.
