Meland Caps Historic Week With MIAC Award

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/01/14)—Concordia senior pitcher Jackson Meland capped an historic week for Cobber baseball by being named the MIAC Pitcher of the Week. Meland was the winning pitcher for head coach Bucky Burgau's milestone 700th career win.

Meland is the first Concordia player to earn conference player of the week honors this season. It is the first time that Meland has been honored as MIAC Pitcher of the Week in his career and he becomes the first CC player to win a weekly award since Apr. 23, 2012.

Meland was dominating in the historic win at Dickinson State on Friday. He pitched a complete-game one-hitter to record his second win of the season. Meland gave up a lone single in the first inning and then proceeded to retire 16 straight Blue Hawk hitters and 20 of the final 21 batters he faced. During the final six innings he only allowed two balls to be hit into the outfield and induced 11 batters to ground out.

Meland finished with six strikeouts and didn't allow an earned run in the game. He faced only three batters over the minimum and did not allow a walk.

Meland's complete control at Dickinson State helped lower his season earned run average to 3.24. Opposing hitters are hitting a meager .202 against the lefty in 25.0 innings of work. He has only allowed a combined 21 hits and walks (0.84) this season.

Meland and Concordia will be hoping to open conference play when they travel to Collegeville to take on St. John's on Wednesday, Apr. 2 at 2:30 p.m.
