A Champion And A Runner-Up
WAVERLY, Iowa (3/13/2021)---Does anyone know what the "H" was going on in Waverly over the weekend? I'll tell you. Concordia had a pair of athletes finish in the Top 2 at the DIII Elite Meet at Wartburg. Senior Josie Herrmann broke a school record, won the 800 meters and junior Cayle Hovland finished second in the shot put and forth in the weight throw – that's all.
The two "H" standouts led the Concordia crew that competed in the meet that featured 38 teams – mostly around the Upper Midwest. Along with senior Meritt Miller, they were able to amass 31 team points which was good for seventh place at the meet.
Just when you think there isn't a way for Herrmann to top her previous achievement, she goes and completely outdoes herself. Herrmann started the weekend by shattering the school record in the indoor mile. She clocked a 5:00.39 in the race and placed third. Her time bettered the previous Cobber record by almost five seconds. The old record of 5:05.32 by Natalie Hanson had stood since 2006.
Herrmann decided a school record and third-place finish on Friday wasn't good enough and she went out and recorded a first-place finish in the 800 meters. Herrmann raced to a time of 2:13.81 which is the second fastest in school history and was .38 of a second faster than the runner-up.
Hovland closed the book on her junior indoor season in fitting style – with another personal best mark. She came up with a distance of 44-01.25 on her second attempt in the shot put on Saturday which was good for a second-place finish. Her mark bettered her previous PR of 43-09.75 which she set earlier in the year.
Hovland started the meet by placing fourth in the weight throw – and yes, it was another personal best. She headed into the weekend with a best of 52-01.00 which she put up this season. Hovland then uncorked a throw of 52-02.25 on her very last attempt to jump from sixth place to fourth place. Her finishing distance is less than 2—feet shy of the school record of 54-04.00 set by Laura Utke in 1999.
Miller had a Top 8 finish in the mile with a personal best time of 5:17.17. She finished seventh in the event and capped the best indoor season of her career.
Junior Jacey Schlosser was the fourth member of the Cobbers to head south for the weekend. She finished 10th in the shot put with a distance of 38-09.75.
