Doubled Up In Duluth

VIRGINIA, Minn. (2/18/24)---The Cobbers found the waters of Lake Superior a little cold and icy on their doubleheader weekend in Duluth. Concordia fell 6-3 to St. Scholastica on Saturday and was blanked by UW-Superior on Sunday.

The two losses leave the Cobbers with a 1-5 overall record on the year. CC is now 0-2 against MIAC opponents.

Concordia 3, St. Scholastica 6
The first match of the weekend was the closest with the Cobbers dropping all three doubles matches against the Saints and then nearly pulled off the comeback of the season by winning three singles matches and losing a pair in extra games or the super set.

Concordia's Top 2 singles players earned wins in straight sets to give CC a chance at the comeback. Kai Pierce won 6-2, 6-0 at No.2 singles and Logan Sandberg was right behind Pierce with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No.1 singles.

The third singles win against St. Scholastica came off the racquet of Hunter Rice. Rice was able to outlast his opponent at No.5 singles. He lost the first set 6-4 and then rallied to win 6-3 in the second and 11-9 in the super-set.

Freshman Isaac Maddock nearly gave CC a second super-set win. He lost the opener 6-4 at No.3 singles before claiming an identical 6-4 victory in the second. The super-set came down to a pair of service breaks with Maddock falling 10-5.

Concordia 0, UW-Superior
The Cobbers never recovered from their conference loss on Saturday and lost 9-0 to UW-Superior on Sunday. It was the first 9-0 loss of the year for CC.

While the Cobbers were held off the scoreboard for a team point, all nine matches could have swung the other with a couple of key point reversals.

For the second straight match, CC lost all three doubles bouts – but all three were determined by three or fewer games. The closest of the three came at No.2 dubs where Maddock and Kai Kringlie lost 8-5.

The closest singles match was played out at No.3 singles where Maddock fell in the super-set for the second straight match. He opened with a 6-3 win and then lost 6-3 in the second before dropping a 10-6 decision in the super-set.

Kringlie had the other tight match for CC. He lost 6-3 in the first set at No.4 singles and then went back and forth in the second set with the bout going to the tie-breaker. Kringlie was never able to get a foothold in the breaker and lost 7-2.

UP NEXT: Concordia will head back on the road for a conference match when they face Bethel on Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Rogers Tennis Center.
