Cobbers Claim First Win Of The Season During 3-Match Weekend
MOORHEAD, Minn. (3/27/22)---Concordia earned its first win of the season during its 3-match weekend at home. The Cobbers beat Minn.-Morris 9-0 on Sunday morning, and then fell 7-2 to Hamline in the only MIAC match of the two days. CC opened the weekend by dropping a 9-0 decision to Northwestern (Minn.) on Saturday.
The win over Morris on Sunday also gave Concordia head coach Nate Young his first collegiate victory.
The Cobbers weren't pressed against the Cougars as they only dropped four games in doubles play. Concordia picked up an 8-4 win at No.1 doubles play from Jake Peters and Eli Simonson. Sean Martin and Kipton Jenson served up a Sunday brunch bagel at No.2 doubles with the 8-0 victory. The No.3 doubles duo of Logan Voigt and Nicholas Ness capped off the trio of doubles wins by claiming the forfeit victory.
Peters, Simonson and Voigt all won in straight sets, while Martin and Jenson had to outlast their opponents in the super-set tie-breaker.
Peters won the first of his two singles matches on the day by claiming a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No.1 singles. Simonson was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at No.3 singles and Voight recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No.5 spot. Martin rallied from down a set to win 10-1 in the tie-breaker, and Jenson closed out his opponent 10-4 after winning the first set 6-1 and dropping the second 6-4.
Peters and Ness grabbed the only team points in Concordia's second match on Sunday. Peters needed to go to the super-set to record his first conference win of the season. He dropped the first set 7-5, but then rallied to win 6-3 in the second and 10-8 in the tie-breaker. It was also Peters' team-leading fourth singles win of the year.
