FARGO, N.D. (2/07/15)—A pair of freshman made the headlines as Concordia opened their 2015 season. Isaac Toivonen and David Schneck posted singles wins in the Cobbers' 7-2 loss to Bethel.

Toivonen and Schneck give Concordia star power at the top of the lineup as the Cobbers start their season. Toivonen, playing at the No.1 singles spot cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 straight set victory in his first collegiate duals match. Toivonen announced his presence in the college game in the fall when he advanced to the semifinals of the prestigious ITA Regional Tournament in St. Peter.

Schneck also won in straight sets. He jumped out to a 6-1 win in the first set at No.3 singles and then held on for a 6-4 victory in the second set.

The Cobbers almost had a third singles win against the Royals but No.2 singles player Zach Zitur was unable to climb out of an eight-game hole to start the match and lost in the super-set tie breaker. Zitur lost the first eight games of his match but then started to roll midway through the second set. He won 6-4 in the second set but then ran out of gas in the tie breaker after spending all his energy to recover from the slow start.          

Like Zitur, Concordia started the match in a big hole. The Cobbers fell behind 3-0 after dropping all three doubles bouts. Toivonen and Zitur lost 8-4 at No.1 singles. The closest doubles match came in the No.2 spot where Schneck and sophomore Jesse Schneeberger lost 9-7.

Concordia won't have to wait long to try and win their first match of the season. The Cobbers will host St. Scholastica on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 4 p.m. at Courts Plus in Fargo.
