Experience Overflows in 8-1 Win Over Northwestern

FARGO, N.D. (3/22/14)—Concordia was rewarded for all their recent close calls as they learned how to finish and beat Northwestern (Minn.) 8-1. The Cobbers won all six singles matches in picking up their second win of the season.

Concordia entered the match with the Eagles having lost six straight but had been close in multiple singles and doubles bouts throughout the streak. The growing optimism spilled over against Northwestern as CC won two of the three doubles matches and then swept the singles competition.

Even Jystad and Austin Laumb got the Cobbers on the board first when they pitched an 8-0 shutout at No.3 doubles. It was only the second time this season the pair has been matched in doubles play and they are now 1-1. Zach Zitur and Jesse Schneeberger combined to earn the second doubles victory when they outlasted their opponents at No.2 doubles. The 8-5 win was the tandem's second of the season.

The Cobbers then recorded five straight-set wins and a super-set tie-breaker in singles play. Zitur, Schneeberger, Sam Smith, Jystad and Laumb all won in two sets while Zach Biggar won in the tie-breaker at No.5 singles.

Jystad continued his dominance over the Eagles by blanking his single foe as well. Jystad won 6-0, 6-0 to pick up his team-leading fourth singles win of the year. Zitur claimed a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No.1 singles and Schneeberger posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No.2 singles. Both players now have two singles wins on the year.

Smith went 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to record his third singles win of the year while Laumb came up with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No.6 singles to earn his first collegiate singles  victory.

Biggar lost the first set at No.5 singles but then came roaring back to snatch a 3-6, 6-4, 10-1 win.

Concordia will try to head outdoors next weekend when they host Macalester on Saturday, Mar. 29.
