An Overtime Thriller To Open 2025

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/03/25)---Concordia opened the 2025 portion of its schedule by battling Marian (Wis.) in an overtime thriller which the Cobbers finally lost 4-3.

The Cobbers held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before the Sabres answered with back-to-back goals in the second and third periods and the game winner at the 2:24 mark of overtime.

Concordia (4-7-1) opened the scoring at the tail end of the first period. Sophomore Zak Kennett was able to 1-time a centering pass from the top of the crease to give CC a 1-0 lead. The tally at 17:37 was Kennett's first collegiate goal and Blake Johnson earned his collegiate assist on the play.

Marian (5-6) scored a crucial goal before the end of the first period and tied the game at 1-1 at the 19:00 mark.

The Cobbers regained their 1-goal lead at 4:53 of the second frame when Hunter Olson pounced on a loose puck in the neutral zone when CC was killing off a penalty, raced into the Marian zone and put a silky backhand to forehand move that beat the goalie cleanly to his glove side. The strike was Olson's third overall goal of the year and the team's first shorty of the year.

The Sabres took their first lead of the game when they scored at 5:36 of the second period and 14:16 of the third.

Marian's 3-2 was short-lived as junior Joe Harguindeguy tapped home a rebound just 1:16 after Concordia fell behind by a goal.

Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe and Jackson Lucia assisted on Harguindeguy's third goal of the year.

The teams would finish off the final 4:28 or regulation without a goal and then Marian would claim the winner in the third minute of the 3-on-3 overtime session.

Concordia held a 46-29 advantage in shots on goal. It's the second straight game that CC has posted 46 shots on goal and the third time this year they have reached the 40-shot plateau.

Sophomore goalie Brock Moroz made his first start of the season and turned aside 25 shots.

The two teams will finish off the 2-game series when they square off on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 11 a.m.
