Last-Second, Second-Period Goal Haunts Cobbers

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/14/23)---It looked like the Cobbers and Wis.-Stout would skate into the second intermission deadlocked at 1-1, but then the Blue Devils scored the eventual-game winning goal with 4-seconds left on the clock and went on to post a 4-1 win.

Concordia battled the 11-win Blue Devils through the first 39:56 of the game, but that last-second goal proved to be a deciding factor in the Cobbers' last non-conference game of the year.

Concordia is now 5-9-1 on the season, while Stout wins for the third straight game – all against MIAC opponents – and improves to 12-4-1.

Stout opened the scoring midway through the first period, and held a 1-0 lead after the first period. The Cobbers tied the game in the first minute of the second period when Caden Triggs slid a pass across the top of the crease that found Hunter Olson for a tap-in goal.

Olson's third tally of the year came at the 44-second mark and tied the game at 1-1. Triggs and Jacen Bracko earned the assists on CC's lone goal of the game.

The score stayed at 1-1 until the final minute of the period when the Blue Devils scored the game winner at 19:56.

Stout would add an insurance goal on the power play at 11:02 of the final period, and then end the score line with an empty net strike at 17:49.

For the third time in the last four game, the Cobbers outshot their opponent but came up on the wrong end on the scoreboard. Concordia held a 36-29 advantage in shots on goal for the game.

Olson and Bauer Barry led the Cobbers with five shots each.

Sophomore Evan Babekuhl made his first college start and played well throughout the 90 minutes. He made 25 saves in 58:51 of action.
