Three Straight Rallies Earns Single Standings Point
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (11/20/21)---Concordia rallied from a 1-goal deficit on three different occasions in their series finale at St. Olaf but couldn't answer the Oles in the shootout and earned only one point in the game.
The 3-3 score line goes in the record book as a tie with the Cobbers getting a single standings point and the Oles coming away with two points.
The tie is the second of the year for Concordia who is now 4-3-2 in all games and 2-1-1 in the MIAC. The Cobbers has seven league points which is tied for top spot in the standings.
The game of catch-up started in the first period when St. Olaf scored at the 6:22 mark. Concordia would trail 1-0 until 8:21 of the second period. Freshman Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe came through with his third goal of the season. Hunter Olson and Alex Stoley has the assists on CC's first goal.
St. Olaf (3-3-2, 2-1-1 MIAC) retook a 1-goal lead with 2:24 left in the second frame. The Cobbers rallied for the second time before the period would finish. Sophomore Cole O'Connell tied the game at 2-2 when he notched his team-leading sixth goal of the year with 10 ticks left on the clock. Kain Stevenson and Tyler Bossert recorded the assists for the game-tying goal.
The goal-scoring theme continued in the third period. St. Olaf struck first with a goal at 7:48 and then the Cobbers countered with their third game-tying goal at 13:17. Freshman Mason Plante picked the perfect time to score his first college goal as he tied the game at 3-3. Bossert got his second assist of the game and Henkemeyer-Howe picked up his second point.
Bossert now has an MIAC-leading 11 assists on the year. His 11 assists also rank in the Top 5 in all of Division III.
Concordia had the better of the chances in the 5-minute overtime period but couldn't put away the game winner. CC outshot the Oles 3-2 in the extra frame.
The Cobbers then lost the shootout 2-1. Henkemeyer-Howe scored on the first shootout attempt, but then a pair of missed shots sent CC to the single standings point.
Concordia put up 42 shots in the game. It was their second highest shot total of the year. St. Olaf had 27 shots for the three periods.
Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play. CC didn't score in its 11 power play chances on the weekend and is now 2-for-19 (10.5%) in its last four game.
Jackson Nelson stopped 24 shots for the Cobbers.
UP NEXT: Concordia will have a break for the Thanksgiving holiday and return to action on Friday, Dec. 3 when they host No.5-ranked Augsburg in the first of a 2-game series. The Auggies are 6-0-0 this season and 2-0-0 in the MIAC.
