Feeling The Effects Of Finals Week

Feeling The Effects Of Finals Week

ASHLAND, Wis. (12/18/15)—Concordia felt the malaise of finals week as they gave up the first five goals in their game at Northland and lost 5-2 to the Lumberjacks.

The Cobbers were unable to get on the board until the ninth minute of the third period despite outshooting Northland 32-22 in the game.

The loss is the second straight for the Cobbers who drop back to the .500 mark for the season. CC is now 5-5 on the year. The Lumberjacks end their two-game losing streak and are now 3-9 on the year.

The game went the wrong way from the start of the first period. Northland recorded the first two shots of the game and then scored on the third shot at the 3:39 mark. The teams would go scoreless until the second minute of the second period when the Lumberjacks scored the first of their three goals in the frame.

Concordia was outshot by Northland in the first period 9-7 but then held a 14-8 edge in shots on goal in the second period and 11-5 in the third. Unfortunately for CC the Lumberjacks would make the most of their opportunities and outscore the Cobbers 4-2 in the final 40 minutes of play.

Northland added the third and fourth goals of the game in a 3:37 stretch midway through the second period and then made it 5-0 at the 3:01 mark of the final period.

A pair of freshmen would get Concordia on the board in the final 12:30 of play. Mario Bianchi broke up the shutout at 8:53 and then Jake Stilwell finished off the scoring at the 18:00-minute mark. Jon Grebosky and Zach Doerring assisted on Bianchi's third goal of the season while Adam Wiertzema and Jordan Christianson added the helpers on Stilwell's third goal of the campaign.

Doerring led all players with six shots on goal. Bianchi, Grebosky and Bryan Kronberger added five shots each for the contest.

The Cobbers split the goaltending duties in the game. Sophomore Alex Reichle started the contest and played the first 40 minutes. He stopped 13 shots. Freshman Donald Oldreive played the final period and made four saves.

WISCONSIN WOES PART IV
The loss to Northland marks the fourth straight loss for the Cobbers this season against a team from the state of Wisconsin. Concordia is 5-1 against teams from Minnesota but winless against teams from the neighbors to the east. CC will have one last chance to break that streak when they play at Northland tomorrow.

FRESHMAN FROLICS
Mario Bianchi and Jake Stilwell continued the trend of first-year players scoring for the Cobbers. Concordia has 25 goals on the year and 13 come from the newest members of the team. The Cobbers now have four of the top 8 freshmen goal scorers in the MIAC.

POWER OUTAGE
Concordia went 0-for-2 on the power play against Northland and hasn't scored a power play goal in seven straight games. The Cobbers haven't scored in their last 26 power play attempts.

WHAT'S NEXT
Concordia will finish off the 2015 portion of its schedule when they complete the two-game series at Northland on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 2 p.m.
