The Storyline Remains The Same - OT And Suderman

ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/31/14)—A pair of reoccurring themes surfaced in Concordia's win at Hamline on Friday. The first was that the Cobbers played an overtime game and the second was that senior captain Caleb Suderman stepped up to lead by example.

Suderman, who is the nation's top scoring defenseman, scored both of Concordia's goals in the 2-1 overtime victory. His second goal came with just 8-seconds left in overtime and gave the Cobbers a full three league points for the win. CC is now 4-4-3 in league play and moves into fourth place in the MIAC standings. The Cobbers are 10-6-4 overall.

The game, which was Concordia's third straight overtime contest and sixth in the last eight games, was determined by the play of Hamline goalie John Sellie-Hanson. Sellie Hanson stopped 32 of the 34 shots he faced as Concordia outshot the Pipers 34-18 for the game. The Cobbers had a 15-3 edge in shots and a 19-5 advantage in the third period and overtime.

Concordia gave up the first goal of the game in the final five minutes of the first period. The Pipers scored at 15:22 on their fifth shot on goal of the game.

Suderman tied the game in the final minute of the second period when he scored his 12th goal of the season on the power play at 19:30. Jordie Bancroft and Andrew Deters picked up the assist on CC's 18th power play goal of the season. Concordia leads the MIAC in power play goals this season.

The Cobbers would dominate the third period but Sellie-Hanson refused to allow Hamline to fall behind. CC had a pair of power plays in the final stanza and put up six quality chances on goal but couldn't come up with the game winner.

Concordia continued their suffocating ways in the extra session and Suderman finally delivered before time ran out. Deters and Garrett Hendrickson were credited with the assists on the game winner. For Deters it was his team-leading 18th assist and 24th overall point of the season. He has 10 helpers in the last six games and continues to lead the MIAC in points and assists. Hendrickson recorded his 17th point of the year which leads all freshmen in the league.

Kelly Andrew made his second consecutive start in goal for Concordia and stopped 17 of the 18 shots he faced. He is now 2-0-1 on the year and has a team-leading 1.88 goals against average.

The two teams will complete the series on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 2:05 p.m.
