MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/15/25)---It was a pretty dramatic Tax Day at Bucky Burgau Field.
Concordia got a brand new Hit King and the Cobbers came away with a sweep over Augsburg to jump into fifth place in the MIAC standings.
Senior Thomas Horan doubled down on dramatic moments when he came up with a walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh in Game 1 to give Concordia a 3-2 win. What made the moment even more special was the fact that the hit gave Horan sole ownership of the Cobber all-time hit record.
Horan's 1-out single to right field with the bases loaded earned CC the victory and pushed his career total to 198, which surpassed Andy Gravdahl's mark of 197 from 2018-23.
Concordia followed that memorable moment by scoring six unanswered runs in Game 1 to post a 6-2 victory.
The two wins bumped the Cobbers' conference mark to 7-5 on the year. CC is tied with St. Mary's for fifth place, and the two teams are 2.0 games out of the fourth and final spot for the MIAC playoffs.
Concordia is 15-13 in all games this year.
Augsburg, who entered the day tied with the Cobbers in the MIAC standings, falls to 4-6 in league play and 10-17 overall.
Game 1: Concordia 3, Augsburg 2
Augsburg came out swinging in the opener and took an early 1-0 lead when Ben Shumansky's single down the left-field line brought home Luke Knudsen, who led off the frame with a double.
The Auggies took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth, but then CC responded with a single run in the bottom of the fifth and then the milestone-moment marker in the bottom of the seventh.
The run in the fifth came courtesy of a Caiden Kjelstrom double down the left-field line, which brought home Knudsen all the way from first.
The game winner came after the Cobbers had loaded the bases on a Brayden Wolfgram infield single, sacrifice bunt, an intentional walk and a hit batter.
Both teams had six hits in the opener. Horan led the way by going 2-for-4. He tied the hit record with a double in the third inning.
Grant Anderson got the start for the CC pitching staff and went 5.0 solid innings. He only allowed two runs on five hits and struck out two.
Dylan Erholtz came on in the sixth inning and got the late-game win – his second of the season.
Game 2: Concordia 6, Augsburg 2
The Auggies plated single runs in the second and fourth innings before the Cobbers countered with six unanswered scores to take Game 2.
The big inning for CC was the eighth when they scored three times to put the game out of reach. Luke Van Erp, Justin Kloster and Wolfgram had the three RBI in the eighth. Kloster used his speed to leg out a fielder's choice ground ball that negated a would-be inning-ending double play, which set up a double for Wolfgram.
Knudsen, David Dorsey and Van Erp all had 2-hit games as Concordia outhit Augsburg 9-5.
Alex Rudquist went 7.1 innings, and his only blemishes were a pair of solo home runs. He gave up four hits on his way to his second win of the year. Wyatt Mohr entered the game with a runner on first and one out and got the final five outs of the game to record his first collegiate save.
100-Club Watch: Kjelstrom had a single hit on the day and has 98 career hits, while David Dorsey's two hits in the finale bring his career total to 94.
Concordia will continue with its mammoth 13-game homestand when they host St. Scholastica on Saturday, Apr. 19 at 1 p.m.
