A Healthy Does Of Home Cookin'

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/12/24)---The away-home MIAC doubleheader weekend was a glimpse into the 2024 season for Concordia.

The Cobbers lost on the road on Friday night and returned home to beat St. Scholastica 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21) on Saturday afternoon.

Concordia hasn't won a match on the road this season but improved its home record to 2-2 on the year. The win also gives the Cobbers a 2-3 mark in MIAC play which is good for seventh place in the league standings.

Concordia took the match to the Saints from the very first serve. CC won four of the first five points, got out to a 9-2 lead and never let St. Scholastica get to within three points for the entire opening set.

The second set was won at the finish line with the Cobbers claiming three of the final four points after the score was tied 22-22. A service error, kill by Maria Watt and a second service error gave CC the 25-23 win.

After dropping a 25-22 decision in the second set, Concordia responded by going on a 9-1 run at the start of the fourth set to take control of the set. The Cobbers fell behind 4-0 at the start of the fourth set but then used the 9-1 run to grab a 9-5 lead – a lead they would never relinquish in closing out the match.

Concordia's defense came up big against the Saints. The Cobbers were able to hold St. Scholastica to a .087 attack percentage, which is a season-low for a CC opponent.

Concordia's backline players came up with 100 digs in the game. It is only the second time this season CC has reached a triple-digit dig total.

The Cobbers had five players with at least 10 digs in the match. Junior Hanna Mooney had a season-high 22 digs to lead CC. Concordia had three other players also post season-high dig totals. Cayla Sailor had 19, Kelsi Martini added 18 and Madalyn Anderson came away with 10.

Setter Betsy Schiltz was the other member of the Cobber crew that had at least 10 digs. She finished with 10 digs to go along with a team-high 30 assists.

Watt and Mallory Leitner led the frontline players. Watt had a team-high 12 kills and hit .321 while Leitner went for 10 kills and had a .154 attack percentage. Watt has led the team in kills on two occasions and the Cobbers have won both matches.

Concordia will look to continue its success at home when they host Gustavus on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
