Cobbers Flip The Script To Secure Win
MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/16/21)---Concordia flipped the script in their 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-17) win over St. Mary's. In their previous two matches, the Cobbers won the first set but then lost the match. On Saturday against the Cardinals, CC lost the first set but then won the match.
The come-from-behind victory ends a 4-match slide for the Cobbers and gives them there first MIAC win. Concordia is now 7-14 overall and 1-6 in conference play. St. Mary's falls for the fourth straight time and is now 7-16 in all matches and 3-4 in the MIAC.
The swing point in the match may have come at the end of the first set when the Cobbers trailed 23-18. CC would go on a 5-1 run and force the Cardinals to take a timeout with a slim 24-23. SMU would win the next point to take the set, but the Cobbers grabbed the momentum and used that to step up their game in the second set.
The second set was a 1-point affair at 15-14 and then the Cobbers won five of the next six points to take control of the bout.
Concordia would trail at only one point after the second set, and that was for only three points at the start of the third set. The turning point in the third came with the score deadlocked at 9-9. CC went on a 5-0 which propelled them to the 25-16 win.
The Cobbers finished the match by hitting .224 and had 56 kills. It is the fifth time this season that CC hit over .200 for a match. Concordia is now 4-1 in those matches.
Concordia had three players with double-digit kill totals. Brook Carney led all players with 13 winners – one shy of her season best. She also had a match-high attack percentage. Carney hit .417 which is also her second best mark of the year.
Anna Brakke posted her 11th double-double of the year. She had 11 kills and 17 digs. She now has 224 kills and 287 digs for the year. Both totals are single-season career highs for Brakke. She is eighth in the MIAC in kills and seventh in digs.
Kendra Wiggs was the third Cobber to have at least 10 winners. She finished with 10 kills and hit .353 in her 17 attack chances.
Mariah Iwen and Kenzie Urbanec combined for 50 assists. Iwen had a team 26 helpers and recorded 60 in the two matches over the weekend.
Chloe Markovic led the CC defense with 19 digs. She has 322 for the year which is sixth most in the MIAC.
UP NEXT: Concordia will host its final non-conference match of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. when they face Minn.-Morris. The Cobbers dropped a 3-1 decision to the Cougars earlier in the year.
