Cobbers Can't Close, Fall To Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (4/14/21)---Concordia couldn't close the deal in the first set then dropped the next two and lost 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-19) at Augsburg.

The Cobbers led 25-20 in the opener before the Auggies ran off five straight to tie the set. CC then rebounded to win the next two and take a 22-20 lead. Augsburg tied the set for the second time with the next two points. Concordia got a kill by senior Lexi Turn to grab a 23-22 lead and that's when things went south. An attack error by the Cobbers tied the set at 23-23 and then the Auggies took a 24-23 lead on a service ace. CC head coach Faith Dooley called timeout to try and stop the late-set Auggie momentum. Unfortunately for CC, Augsburg came up with a winner on the next point to take the set at 25-23.

The Cobbers would win three of the first four points in the second set and held a 6-5 lead. CC trailed by only one at 9-8 before the Auggies won six of the next eight points and finished the 25-15 win on an 8-1 run.

The third set was more of the same for Concordia. The Cobbers had a brief lead early, the set was tied at 14-14 and then Augsburg won six of the next seven and 11 of the last 16 points to win 25-19.

Concordia hit .174 for the match as compared to .252 for the Auggies. CC had 37 kills and 50 digs while Augsburg came away with 41 winners and 60 digs. Both teams put up five blocks.

Bailey Gronner led the Cobbers in kills for the third straight match and had a double-digit winner total. She recorded 10 kills and had seven digs. Gronner has put up 36 winners in the last three matches and leads the team with 51 kills on the season.

Anna Brakke had nine kills and hit a team-best .259. She also had a team-high 12 digs and has 73 for the season.

Kendra Wiggs had five kills and a team-high three blocks while Jill Klaphake recorded a team-best 18 assists.
