Late Ties But No Wins
MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/11/21)---Concordia was close against Gustavus but they just couldn't finish. The Cobbers lost the first and third sets by only two points and wound up losing 3-0 (25-23, 25-18,31-29) to the Gusties.
How close were the first and third sets? There were 12 tie scores after the teams had 20 points. In the first set, the score was tied at 21-21, 22-22 and then 23-23 before the Gusties ran off two points to win 25-23. The third set was even more wild as the teams traded single points after the score was tied 21-21. There were nine tie scores before Gustavus won two straight point to get to 31-29 and end the match.
The Cobbers hit above .175 for the second straight match. They finished with a .176 attack percentage and had 43 kills on Sunday. The Gusties hit .241 and had 50 winners.
Senior Bailey Gronner led Concordia with 15 kills and hit .500. She is tied for the team lead in winners this year with 41. Gronner also had a pair of blocks in the match.
Anna Brakke had nine kills and 16 digs. Brook Carney hit .208 and came away with eight kills and three blocks. Kendra Wiggs had seven kills as the quartet of Gronner, Brakke, Carney and Wiggs had 39 of the team's 43 winners.
Senior Lexi Turn might have had the most balanced stat sheet on the day. She had 14 assists, a pair of kills, one dig and one block. Jill Klaphake had a team-high 21 assists and four digs.
Freshman Chloe Markovic tied her season high in digs with 21. She now has 94 for the season.
UP NEXT: Concordia will head to Minneapolis to take on Augsburg on Wednesday, Apr. 14 at 7 p.m. The Auggies are 2-1 on the season.
