The Road Is Finally Kind

ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/08/14)—The road was finally kind to Concordia as the Cobbers beat St. Catherine 3-1 (25-13,25-22,18-25,25-19) to claim their first away win of the season.

Concordia never trailed in the first two sets against the Wildcats en route to their 10th win of the season. The Cobbers are once again above the .500 mark at 10-9 in all matches and are now 3-3 in conference play. St. Catherine loses for the sixth straight match and is now 9-13 overall and 0-6 in the MIAC.

The Cobbers entered the match on Wednesday having lost both of their conference road matches and another away contest at Wis.-Eau Claire. The road woes would end in a hurry as Concordia used a 9-2 run in the middle of the opening set to take control of the match.

CC would roll to a 25-13 win in the first set and then win 10 of the first 11 points in the second set to capture a 25-22 victory. The Wildcats grabbed the momentum in the match by outscoring CC 9-6 to finish off the second set. That roll would enable St. Catherine to gain a 25-18 win.

Concordia trailed for the start of the fourth set until a Wildcat service error ignited a 9-4 run to give the Cobbers a 14-9 lead. CC would never trail from that point forward and finished the match by winning three of the final four points.

The Cobbers hit .274 for the match as opposed to .125 for the Wildcats. CC had 13 more kills in the four-set affair and had 26 more assists.

Concordia had three players with double-digit kill totals. Senior Kynndyl Ross led the way with 12 winners while juniors Olivia Wangensteen and Anna Skow-Anderson had 10 kills each. It marks the third straight match that Ross has posted at least 10 kills. Wangensteen has also had three straight double-digit kill totals. She also had 12 digs to post her third straight double-double.

Alyssa Schmidt had a match-high 23 digs while Mandy Mercil recorded a match-high 26 assists and Kelly Reed put up a match-high five blocks. Schmidt has had at least 20 digs in six of the team's last seven matches.

Concordia will have a week break to prepare for seven-time defending MIAC champion St. Thomas. The Cobbers will host the No.12-ranked Tommies on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.
