Match Points Go A-Begging

MOORHEAD, Minn, (9/29/12)—Concordia had two match points but was unable to put away a scrappy St. Mary's team and lost 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 25-20, 25-23, 17-15) in Moorhead. The Cobbers held advantages of 7-4, 13-11 and 14-12 in the fifth set but couldn't come up with the key points and lost for the first time in conference play.

Concordia (6-7/4-1 MIAC) held a 2-1 set lead but allowed St. Mary's to win four of the final six points in set 4 and were forced to go to the fifth set where the Cardinals once again prevailed at the back end of the set.

Cobber freshman Olivia Wangensteen led all players with a season-high 27 kills. She also recorded a season-high 22 digs in the match to come away with the first 20-20 of her career. She has now had at least 15 kills in four straight matches. Danelle Loomis had a career-high 58 assists. It marked only the second time in the past two years a CC player has had 50 assists in a single match. Rachel Wiinanen came away with a match-high 31 digs and Angie Waller added 15 kills and 19 digs.

St. Mary's (8-6/3-2 MIAC) had two players with double-digit kill totals. Megan Leisen came away with 14 kills and Carissa Hahn was one behind with 13. Hahn also had a team-high 23 digs. Lexi Assimos collected 45 assists.

Concordia hit .188 as a team for the five sets while the Cardinals had a .169 hit percentage.

The Cobbers will now hit the road and travel to St. Paul to take on No. 7-ranked St. Thomas on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.
