Kalevik Leads Cobbers On Day 1 At MIAC Meet

ST. PAUL, Minn. (5/10/24)---Junior Jenna Kalevik continued her tremendous breakout season as she won the high jump to lead Concordia on Day 1 at the MIAC Championship Meet.

The Cobbers only got team points in two different events, but are poised to make a run on Saturday with seven qualifying marks for the finals in track events.

Kalevik earned the Cobbers 10 points by matching her career-best height in the high jump. She cleared 5-02.25 on her first attempt to get into a 4-way tie for the top height. Kalevk won the event because of fewer misses at the winning height. The other three athletes who tied for the best height all missed in their opening attempt at 5-02.25.

Kalevik was also one of the seven qualifiers for Saturday's final's races. She ran a 15.22 in the 100-meter hurdles and qualified with the third fastest time.

Kalevik completed her first day of the meet by placing 14th in the long jump with a distance of 16-01.00.

Concordia also scored team points in the last event of Day 1 – the 4x800-meter relay. The group of Londyn Ames, Elsie Hatlevig, Airial Johnson and Drew Frolek clocked a time of 10:09.22 to finish in eighth place. That time was a season-best for a Cobber crew.

Kalevik's sprint teammates Andie Sandman, Emily Rengo and Piper Osborne also qualified for the finals in events. Sandman raced to a time of 12.69 and qualified in seventh place for the 100-meter dash. Rengo came through with a pair of qualifying times. She crossed the line in 25.31 in the 200 meters which was good for the second-fastest time and was third in the 400 meters at 58.94. Osborne also qualified in the 200 meters with a time of 25.59.

Sophomore Kyla Nygaard and senior Maddie Guler will also be running in the finals of the 400 meters. Nygaard posted the second-fastest time at 58.74, while Guler was the final qualifier for the finals with a mark of 1:00.20.

The "Toughest Athlete of the Meet" award goes to junior Meg Shercliffe who ran a 1:09.07 in the 400-meter hurdles seven days after breaking her elbow in the same event at the NDSU Bison Tune-Up Meet.

UP NEXT: Concordia will finish off the 2024 MIAC Championship Meet on Saturday, May 11 beginning at 12 p.m. at Hamline University.
