Success at St. Mary's

WINONA, Minn. (4/15/23)---Concordia had four event winners and recorded 19 Top 5 finishes at the SMU Cardinal Invitational in Winona.

Maddie Guler, Drew Frolek, Jenna Kalevik and Emily Rengo led the way as they all came away with winning marks in their events.

Guler won the 400 meters with a 1:00.62, Frolek claimed the title in the 800 meters after crossing the line in 2:21.63, Kalevik earned the title in the high jump at 4-11.00 while Rengo beat all competitors in the long jump with a distance of 16-01.75.

Guler's time in the 400 is a season best and the seventh fastest in the MIAC this year. Frolek is now No.7 in the conference with her winning time which is also a season best. Kalevik jumps into the Top 5 of the MIAC with her winning height. It is also a college best for the sophomore. Rengo's distance in the long jump is ninth farthest in the MIAC this year.

Rengo also placed second in the 100-meter dash on Saturday. She clocked a 12.90 which is just off her season-best time of 12.50 which is No.3 on the MIAC list this year.

Kalevik also put up a triple Top 5 day. She was third in the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best mark of 16.74 and fifth in the long jump at 14-08.50.

Allyson Kangas accounted for three of the Cobber Top 5 finishes as she excelled in the shot put, hammer throw and discus. Kangas was second in both the shot put and hammer throw. She finished the shot put with a distance of 39-01.00 and came through with a mark of 156-04 in the hammer throw. Both marks are season bests and put her in the Top 6 of the conference. Kangas completed her day by earning a 5th-place finish in the discus with a distance of 117-00.

MIAC multi-event queen Peyton Selle opener her outdoor season by finishing in the Top 5 in the 100-meter hurdles and the javelin. She also competed in the 200 meters and shot put. Selle was the runner-up in the hurdles sprint with a time of 15.98. He mark of 103-07 was good for fifth place in the javelin.

The long jump ended up being the top even for the Cobbers in Winona. Besides the event win for Rengo, Meg Shercliffe was second at 16-00.50. Two-sport athlete Kiernan Darling was third at 15-00.50 and Kalevik was fourth.


The triple jump was also kind to the Cobbers with Mary Wunderlich, Kyra Nichols and Darling coming through with a 2-3-4 finish. Wunderlich was the runner-up at 32-02.25, Nichols was third with a distance of 31-00.00 and Darling was fourth at 30-11.25.                          

Concordia also had a pair of Top 5 finishes in the 3000-meter steeplechase and the 5000 meters.

Airial Johnson toured the tack in 12:51.97 to place second in the steeplechase. She was followed by freshman Sophia Revoir who was third with a time of 13:34.26. Both athletes are now in the Top 16 of the MIAC in the event.

Seniors Emily Rugloski and Amelia Landsverk turned in season-best times in the 5K. Rugloski was second at 19:04.07 and Landsverk was fifth at 20:45.34.

UP NEXT: Concordia will head to Northfield to participate in the Carleton Relays on Saturday, Apr. 22 at 11 a.m.
