Field Athletes And Relay Squads Lead Cobbers At MIAC Meet

WINONA, Minn. (5/14/22)---Field athletes and relay teams were the story of the MIAC Outdoor Championship Meet for Concordia. The Cobbers had all six of their Top 5 individual finishes posted by field athletes, and the three CC relay squads all finished in the Top 5.

The field athletes and relay teams combined to score 70 of Concordia's 81 team points as the Cobbers finished sixth in the final team standings. It is the third straight sixth-place finish for CC at the MIAC Outdoor Meet.

Senior Cayle Hovland capped her MIAC career by scoring in three different throwing events, and recorded 19 team points. She posted runner-up finishes in both the shot put and discus throw, and was sixth in the hammer throw. Hovland started her MIAC meet by placing third in the discus with a season-best mark of 134-07, which was a season-best distance. She finished Friday by placing sixth in hammer throw with a distance of 144-05.00. Hovland camer through with her second, runner-up finish of the meet when she came through with a distance of 43-07.00 in the shot put.

Allyson Kangas recorded a pair of third-place finishes in the final conference meet of her career. Kangas opened with a third-place mark in the hammer throw. Her best distance of the meet came on her final attempt when she posted a distance of 152-03. Kangas duplicated her third-place finish in the shot put on Saturday. She recorded her distance of 42-09.00 on her fifth try.

Jacey Schlosser came through with two team scoring places in the meet. She was fourth in the discus on Friday and sixth in the shot put on Saturday. Schlosser's fourth-place distance in the discus was recorded at 123-00. She then recorded a season-best mark in the shot put at 38-11.05.

Next to Hovland, the second highest individual point scorer for the Cobbers was sophomore Peyton Selle. Selle, who won her second straight conference heptathlon crown last weekend, placed in the Top 8 in three different events in the main MIAC meet. She was fourth in the high jump, seventh in the 100-meter hurdles and eighth in the 400-meter hurdles. Selle cleared 5-0.25 in the high jump, and recorded season-best times in both hurdle events. She crossed the line in 15.51 in the 100-meter hurdles, and posted a time of 1:08.94 in the 400-meter hurdles.

The final team-scoring finish in the field events came from Aubrie Werk in the javelin. She came through with a season-best of 114-05 and placed seventh.  

The top Cobber relay finish came on Friday when the quartet of Isabel Fredrickson, Eden Smith, Kelly Lorenz and Drew Frolek clocked a 9:38.68 and finished in third place. That time was a season best mark.

Concordia also came through with a fifth-place mark in the 4x400-meter relay and was fourth in the 4x100-meter event. The squad of Maddie Guler, Mary Wunderlich, Carlie Heinecke and Sierra Ramberg sprinted to a time of 50.00 in the 4x100 which is No.11 on the school's all-time list.                              

Guler, Frolek and Fredrickson were responsible for the team-scoring finishes in the other track events. Guler ran a time of 1:00.09, and was sixth, in the 400 meters. She clocked her first-ever, sub-60-second time in the prelims when she posted a time of 59.97

Frolek was eighth in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 2:22.17, while Fredrickson was eighth in the 1500 meters at 5:02.40.

Senior Nicole Lilleberg ran a 15.95 in the 110-meter hurdles finals and placed eighth. She also ran a 15.62 in the prelims which is a PR.  

UP NEXT: Concordia will spend the next week traveling east to compete in last chance meets. CC is scheduled to compete at the North Central Multi-Event Meet on May 16-17 and then participate in the Wis.-La Crosse NCAA Qualifier on Thursday, May 19.
