Herrmann Eases Into A School Record

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (2/29/20)--- When athletes get really good at their sport they make high-level performances very easy. That's the realm that junior Josie Herrmann has entered.

While the other middle-distance athletes look like they are straining in the final 100 meters of a race, Herrmann looks like she is out for a leisurely jog on a sunny afternoon. Herrmann showed that characteristic in the 1000 meters on Day 2 at the MIAC Indoor Championship Meet. While her competitors were forcing themselves to get to a top speed, Herrmann strode through the final 200 meters and won the event by almost a full second.

Oh yeah, she also broke a school record in the process. Herrmann's finishing time of 3:00.43 broke the 14-year-old record of 3:01.29 set by Heather Schuster in 2006.

Herrmann helped Concordia to a sixth-place finish at the conference indoor meet. The Cobbers finished with 69 team points which was 14 points shy of a Top 5 finish. The sixth-place finish is the best for the Cobbers at an indoor meet since 2015. Last year CC was seventh.

Hermann's 10 team points for the win in the 1000 meters marked the highest event total for CC on Saturday.

Cayle Hovland and Allyson Kangas paired to score six points in the shot put. It was the second event of the meet where both athletes earned team points. On Friday, Kangas was third in the weight throw and Hovalnd placed fourth. On Saturday, Hovland was fifth in the shot put and Kangas was seventh.

Hovland had a distance of 41-11.50 which was only 14 inches shy of a Top 3 finish. Kangas' best distance of the day came in her third attempt where she recorded a mark of 40-10.25.

The only other individual event Top 8 finish, which scored team points, on Day 2 were posted by Carly Fornshell in the 600 meters. She crossed the line in a time of 1:39.89 which was good for fifth place and four team points. Her finishing time marked the first time she has bettered the 1:40.00 mark and 10th fastest in school history.

Seniors Kara Andersen and Zahra Banks just missed out on the Top 8. Both athletes had ninth-place finishes. Andersen was ninth in the 3000 meters with a time of 10:35.00 and Banks was ninth in the 200 meters at 26.61.

Both of the Cobber relay teams had fifth-place finishes on Saturday. The 4x200-meter relay team of Banks, Carlie Heinecke, Musu Kromah and Lauren Forness started Saturday by posting a season-best time of 1:48.34. That mark is also the fourth fastest in program history.

Banks, Fornshell and Herrmann teamed with Isabel Fredrickson and clocked a season-best time of 4:06.12 in the 4x400-meter relay which was the final event of the meet.

UP NEXT: Herrmann and other Cobber will have a chance to better their season marks and get into consideration for the national meet when they compete at the Wartburg NCAA Indoor Qualifier on Mar. 6-7.
