Quality Shines In Recruiting Class

Quality Shines In Recruiting Class

MOORHEAD, Minn. (7/11/18)---Head Coach Marv Roeske is excited for his incoming class of cross country and track and field athletes as the quality outshines the quantity.

Roeske will welcome a class in the fall that features 12 state meet participants and three state champions.

"This is a normal size recruiting class in quantity but an above average group in quality," Roeske said. "I can't wait to see what this class can do over the span of their four years at Concordia."

The 2018-19 recruiting class features 22 student/athletes from five different states. Roeske stayed close to home for the majority of the class as 19 of the 22 are either from Minnesota or the Fargo area. Besides Minnesota and North Dakota, the incoming class also has athletes from California, South Dakota and Iowa.

The incoming first-year list has eight cross country student/athletes who are also expected to distance for the track and field team.

The class also features a familiar name for Cobber track and field fans. Cayle Hovland is the younger sister of Bailey Hovland who won the hammer throw at this spring's MIAC Outdoor Meet and was named the Outstanding Field Athlete at the Meet. She broke the conference record in the event and also qualified for the NCAA National Meet.

Cayle Hovland, Willmar HS, qualified for the Minnesota State High School Meet this spring in the discus and shot put. She placed in both events at the state meet and finished second in the discus.

The class is also highlighted by Gabby Renelt from Wilmot, S.D. who won the South Dakota State High School championship in the high jump in 2016 and 2017 as well Isabel Frederickson of Bloomington Jefferson HS and Kristin Skog from Pequot Laks HS who have both been a part of state championship relay teams. Anna Brakke from Fargo South HS placed fifth in the triple jump at the 2018 North Dakota State High School Meet.

The Cobber cross country team will begin its schedule at the end of August while the track and field teams will wait until January to start the indoor season.
