Reeves & Thompson Answer With MIAC Meet Records
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (3/08/14)—Cherae Reeves and Hilary Thompson gave resounding answers to the question posed before the MIAC Championship Meet of "how far will they go?" The pair answered with MIAC Meet records in leading Concordia to a 10th place overall finish.
Reeves set a new meet record in the shot put while Thompson tied the meet record, and broke the 25-year-old record in the triple jump. Both athletes won their respective event and wound up combining to score 28 of the team's 33 total points at the two-day meet.
Reeves broke the MIAC Indoor Meet record by putting up a distance of 47-10.00 in the prelims of the shot put. That mark would go on to win the event by over two feet and broke the old conference record of 47-03.50 set by Beck Culp of Hamline in last year's indoor championship meet. Her distance is over a foot farther than her previous season best and is currently the second best mark in the nation this season. Reeves also earned her first MIAC championship in an event in her career.
Thompson uncorked a distance of 38-06.75 in the triple jump to tie the MIAC Meet record set back in 2005. Her mark won the event by over two feet and is the seventh best in all of Division III this season. The distance was over a foot-and-a-half farther than her previous season best.
Not only did Thompson's mark in the triple jump tie the MIAC Meet record but it also broke the 25-year-old Concordia school record in the event. The previous mark of 37-11.50 was set by Kris DeBoer back in 1989. It was one of the program records still left in the record book.
Thompson also scored big team points in the long jump by placing second with a distance of 17-11.50. That is a season best by over seven inches and 24th farthest jump in the nation this season. It is also the sixth farthest jump in school history.
Reeves and Thompson earned All-MIAC honors for their top 3 finishes while Morgan Christian came away with an All-MIAC Honorable Mention award for running a 1:37.88 and placing fifth in the 600 meters. Christian also posted team points in the 800 meters with an eighth-place finish in a time of 2:19.65. Both finishing times over season bests by over a full two seconds.
Other top 10 performances at the indoor championship meet were turned in by Callie Christianson in the 600 meters (10th – 1:39.45), Ruth Peterson in the triple jump (9th – 33-07.25), Hillary Birchem in the shot put (9th – 39-01.00) and Anna Skow-Anderson in the pentathlon (10th – 2,629 points).
Reeves and Thompson will compete in the NCAA Championship Meet next weekend at Nebraska Wesleyan while the rest of the squad will return to action on Mar. 29 at the St. Ben's Indoor/Outdoor Dual Meet.
