A Winning Record To Start 2020

DUBUQUE, Iowa (1/04/20)---Concordia won its first two dual matches at the University of Dubuque Jim Fox Duals but then lost to host Dubuque to finish the day with a 2-1 record.

The Cobbers downed Milw. School of Engineering 35-18 and then cruised to a 41-9 over Fontbonne to set up the match of the tournament with the Spartans who were also 2-0 heading into the final dual of the day. Dubuque was able to come away with three key decision wins by a total of four points and won 28-15.

Concordia completes a 2-dual tournament swing where they go 5-1. CC is now 5-3 in dual meets on the year.

While the team went 2-1 on the day, Concordia once again produced some strong individual performances. Benjamin Bogart, the freshmen trio of Cade Lundeen, Kellen Schauer and Ayden Friese all went undefeated to pace the Cobbers.

Bogart and Lundeen teamed up to tally three pins in the 141-lb weight class. Bogart got the nod in the first two duals, and he flattened both of his two opponents in less than five minutes. Bogart remains unbeaten on the year and is now 3-0 since returning in the final meet of 2019.

Lundeen took the mat in the final contest against the host Dubuque team. The Cobbers trailed 9-0 at the time but Lundeen quickly narrowed that margin with a third-period pin. The win was his 11th of the year.

Schauer was unbeaten at 149. Like Bogart, Schauer wrestled in the first two duals and pinned both opponents. The tournament marked a return from injury from the Cobber freshman but he showed no signs of rust after a long layoff.

Friese was the final undefeated Cobber at the tournament. He pinned his opponent from Fontbonne in the second match of the day and also tallied a fall in one of the tournament's many exhibition matches. Friese upped his season record to 7-8 on the year.

To go along with those four undefeated performances, several other Cobbers earned crucial victories in the team's three duals.

In the opening contest against MSOE, junior Cole Kubesh accepted a forfeit at 125 pounds and then Bogart and Schauer earned their first pins of the day to push the team score to 18-6 after the Cobbers had forfeited at 133 pounds. Sophomore 165-pounder Kaden Spindler added another Cobber pin following a tough Concordia loss at 157 pounds. Gabe Zierden picked up a quick technical fall to win at 197 to turn seal the dual after Concordia lost at 174 and 184. Freshman 285-pounder Austin Ratliff accepted a forfeit to make the final dual score 35-18 for the Cobbers.

Kubesh got the momentum going quickly in the second dual against Fontbonne University. He pinned his opponent to continue Concordia's trend of bonus-point wins. The Cobbers again forfeited at 133 pounds before Bogart, Schauer, and sophomore Bret Wilson (157) all won by fall. Spindler accepted a forfeit, and Frenzel bounced back from a first-round loss to pin his opponent. Friese kept up the frenzy of bonus-point wins for Concordia as he claimed the technical fall victory to push the score to 41-6.

The Cobbers lost the final dual to Dubuque but Lundeen and sophomore 184-pounder Jake Arends both won by fall. Frenzel earned a hard-fought 5-0 decision for Concordia's other win in the 28-15 loss to the host team.

Freshman 157-pounder Gabe Allen gave the Cobber fans plenty of excitement in another of the day's exhibition matches. After nearly getting pinned in the first period, Allen came back from a massive deficit to pin his opponent with only two seconds left in the match.
