Coleman's Heroics Not Enough Against Mustangs

Coleman's Heroics Not Enough Against Mustangs

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/30/12)—Even a crowd-pleasing reversal pin from senior Josten Coleman couldn't keep Concordia from escaping a second straight narrow defeat against Southwest Minnesota State. The Cobbers dropped three of the final four individual matches and lost 21-16 to the Division II Mustangs.

Concordia, which lost by a single point against SMSU last season, has their dual-match record fall to 1-1 on the season. The Mustangs post a win in their very first dual meet of the year.

Coleman provided the only pin fall of the meet when he got out of trouble in his match at 165 by completely reversing his opponent to put him on his back. "I practice the move every day," commented Coleman. "The guys in the practice room are tired of me doing that move on them."

Coleman's match reflected the early part of the overall team competition. Concordia got down early, losing the first three matches, but then roared back to take a 12-10 lead after six matches.

Coach Matt Nagel on the team's performance   (1:59)

"After we lost at 141 I knew we had to come back and get something started," said head coach Matt Nagel. "Kevin Fynboh's match at 157 was a nice win. They had already wrestled twice this year and split so Kevin helped get the match turned around."

In addition to Fynboh's 11-5 win 157, Kyle LeDuc also earned a victory for the Cobbers. LeDuc stopped the Mustang's three-match win streak when he posted a 4-3 win at 149. It was the closes match of the night.

Concordia's lead would be short-lived following Coleman's pin. SMSU won the next three matches including a technical fall win at 197 to close out the team competition. "We were wrestling with some young guys in the lineup," remarked Nagel. "While they didn't get the points tonight, the gained experience for later in the year."

Cobber All-American Tom Bouressa finished off the dual meet by cruising to an 8-0 major decision. Bouressa was never in trouble and remained perfect on the season at 4-0. "The biggest thing for him (Bouressa) is to open up and get rid of the 2-1 decisions," said Nagel. "He needs t start getting major decisions and more."

Concordia will have a short night's rest before competing in the MSU Moorhead Dragon Open on Saturday, Dec. 1 beginning at 9 a.m. The next dual meet for CC will be on Tuesday, Dec. 11 when the Cobbers take on another Division II opponent. Concordia will square off against St. Cloud State at 7 p.m.
