Scoring Spree Leads To Tie In Season Finale

WINONA, Minn. (2/17/24)---Concordia exploded for three goals in their series finale at St. Mary's as they battled to a 3-3 overtime tie with the playoff-bound Cardinals.

The Cobbers rallied from a 2-goal deficit in the third period to force the extra period. Neither team scored and St. Mary's was able to claim the extra point in the standings via the win in the shootout.

Concordia outscored St. Mary's by a combined total of 3-1 in the first and third periods, but it was the second period that sent the game into OT.

The three goals in the series finale marked the first time in nine games that CC has scored more than two goals in a game.

Senior Josie Hell opened the scoring just 13 seconds into the first period. She took possession of the puck on the Cobber blue line, went coast-to-coast on the solo effort and chipped the puck over the top of the St. Mary's goalie who went down to her knees to stop the breakaway.

The unassisted goal was the second of the season for Hell.

The Cardinals were able to take a 3-1 lead when they scored in the final 4 minutes of the first period and two more in the first three minutes of the second stanza.

The Concordia comeback started in the third minute of the third period. Senior Ellie Brewer was able to knock home a rebound with a pile of players around the net after McKenzie Oelkers skated the puck into the zone and fired a backhand shot on goal.

The game-tying tally came at the 6:45 mark on the power play. Reagan Wohlers passed the puck behind the net to Jayda Krikorian, who tried to come out and beat the goalie with a wraparound attempt. Her shot caromed off the goaltender and went right to Morgan Sauvageau who was crashing the goal from the side boards. Sauvageau 1-timed the rebound to tie the game at 3-3.

The goal was Sauvageau's second point of the series and her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Sauvageau has 18 goals and eight assists for 26 points in her first two seasons at CC.

Wohlers also earned her second helper of the weekend on the play.

Both teams had multiple scoring chances in the final 13 minutes of play with the two squads combining for 13 shots. The Cobbers then held a 5-1 shot advantage in the OT period.

St. Mary's outshot the Cobbers 40-30 for the 65 minutes of play.

Cobber senior netminder Becca Macklin made a season-high 37 saves.
