Cobbers Drop Series Opener To Defending National Champ

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/09/14)---The bad news was that Concordia gave up a pair of goals in each of the second and third periods and lost to defending national champion Gustavus. The good news was that the Cobbers went back-and-forth with the third-ranked Gusties for the first 39 minutes of play and ended their scoreless streak.

Concordia trailed 1-0 to Gustavus after the first period but then gave up two goals in the second and third frames and lost 5-1.

Morgan Sauvageau scored the lone goal for the Cobbers when she went on a highlight reel solo run to light the lamp at the 3:54 mark of the third period. CC trailed 3-1 at that point, but gave up two more goals and fell 5-1.

The goal by Sauvageau ended a streak of 12 periods without a goal scored for Concordia. The last goal for CC came in the series opener against St. Olaf on Jan. 26 and was also netted by Sauvageau.

Sauvageau is now second on the team in goals scored. She has six for the season and has accumulated 10 total points, which is the third-highest total for the Cobbers.

Concordia was outshot 46-14 in the game. Jerica Friese and Paige Hanson had three shots each to lead CC.

The Cobbers split the goaltending duties between Hailee Bailey and Becca Macklin. Bailey played the first 49:20 and made 36 saves. Macklin entered in the third period and stopped five shots in 10:40.

UP NEXT: Concordia will look for the split in the series when they host Gustavus on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. at the Cullen Hockey Center in Moorhead.
