Cobbers Can't Hold Early Lead; Fall In OT At St. Scholastica

DULUTH, Minn. (01/12/24)---Concordia scored the first two goals in their series opener at St. Scholastica, but then gave up four of the next five and lost 4-3 in overtime to the Saints.

It was the Cobbers' younger players who supplied the offense on Friday night. First-year forward Abbey Reule and sophomore Jaclyn Lloyd staked CC to a 2-0 lead with goals at the back end of the first period and start of the second period.

Reule got Concordia on the board with her third goal of the year at the 15:03 mark of the opening frame. Senior Jerica Friese recorded the assist on the play.

Lloyd doubled the lead when she netted an unassisted goal at the 4:42 mark of the second period. It was Lloyd's third goal of the season.

St. Scholastica (4-9-1, 3-3-1 MIAC) whittled away at the Cobber lead by getting a goal midway through the second period and then tying the game in the first minute of the third stanza.

The Saints took their first lead of the game when they scored at the 12:17 mark of the final frame. That ignited a string of two goals in 1:42 between the two teams.

First-year forward Taylyn Cope tied the game for the Cobbers when she scored a power play goal at the 14:59 mark. It was Cope's fourth goal of the season.

The two teams played out the final 5 minutes of regulation without a goal, but then the Saints got the game winner just 22 seconds into the extra period. They were able to finish off a length of the ice 1-on-1 situation after the Cobbers won the OT draw and played the puck into the CSS zone.

The Cobbers outshot Scholastica in all three periods in regulation and finished the game with a 29-21 advantage.

Concordia (4-9-1, 0-6-1 MIAC) goalie Hailee Bailey made 17 saves and is now 3-6-0 on the year.
