Doerring Goes Solo To Give Cobbers Win In OT

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/29/22)--- Grace Doerring  decided to take matters into her own hands in overtime in the Cobbers' season opener against Northland. The senior defenseman grabbed the puck just outside her own blue line and didn't stop until she wristed home the game-winning goal from between the faceoff circles.

Doerring's solo-effort goal in the 3-on-3 extra session gave Concordia the 2-1 win over the Lumberjills, and helped CC win its second straight 1-goal season opener. Last year the Cobbers downed Finlandia 1-0.

Concordia held a decided advantage in shots on goal, but couldn't come up with the second goal until the third minute of the OT period. The Cobbers put up at least 14 shots in each period, outshot Northland by at least eight shots in every period and finished with a 49-18 margin in shots on goal. The 49 shots on goal are the most by CC since they posted 68 against the Lumberjills last season.

The game didn't appear to be headed to overtime at the start of the contest. Concordia broke out on top in the fifth minute of the first period when Ellie Brewer scored the opening goal of the year. She took a pass from freshman Sophie Verkerke at the top of the crease and slid the puck past the Northland goalie.

The score line stayed at 1-0 until the start of the second period when the Lumberjills scored against the flow of play at the 5:06 mark.

The Cobbers had several chances on the power play but were never able to convert. CC finished the game by going 0-for-7 with the extra skater. Northland was 0-for-6 on their power play chances.

Concordia outshot the Lumberjills 49-18 for the game. Doerring led all players with 12 shots, while senior McKenzie Oelkers added seven and Abbey Hardwick put up six on net.

Cobber goalie Kiana Flaig made 17 saves to earn her 17th career win.

UP NEXT: The Cobbers will head to Michigan for their first series of the season. Concordia will play two games at Finlandia on Nov. 4-5.
