Iron Is Unkind In Overtime Tie
MOORHEAD, Minn. (02/05/22)---The iron was unkind to Concordia in their 1-1 overtime tie with St. Benedict. The Cobbers hit the pipe late in regulation, had a shot clank off the crossbar in the dying seconds of overtime, and then pounded the post in the shootout which was won by the Bennies 2-1.
The good news for the Cobbers is that the tie ends the team's 7-game losing skid. Concordia is now 6-12-1 overall and 2-9-1 in league. St. Ben's remains unbeaten in its last five games and is now 9-7-1 and 5-4-1 in the MIAC.
The only scoring in regulation came in the second period. St. Ben's got on the board first when they scored on the power play at 3:53. The goal came after the puck went behind the Cobber goal and was played out front to the bottom of the left faceoff circle where the CSB player 1-timed a shot into the top right corner of the net.
The Cobbers would counter with an even-strength goal midway through the period. Sophomore Jerica Friese dug the puck out of a pile of players on the left sideboards after skating the length of the ice with the puck. She then went untouched towards the goal, faked like she was going to go to the near post and pulled the puck back and tucked it past the goalie on the far side.
The unassisted strike at 12:44 was Friese's team-leading 13th of the season. She is now third in the MIAC in goals scored this season.
Neither team would score in the final 27 minutes of the second and third periods, so the game headed to the 3-on-3 overtime session.
The Cobbers killed off a tripping penalty in the final minute of the third frame which carried into overtime. The Bennies never threatened on the power play, and Concordia would produce the best scoring chance of overtime. With the tock ticking under 10-seconds to play, CC broke out of its own end on a 3-on-1 rush. The puck was played into the middle of the ice by Brenna Mjoness to Jordie Egerdahl who had gotten behind the lone CSB defender. Egerdahl ripped a shot with 4-seconds left on the clock that clanked off the crossbar and caromed harmlessly away from the net.
St. Ben's opened scored on the first attempt of the 3-shot shootout. Concordia's first attempt was stopped by the CSB goalie, and then CC goaltender Becca Macklin returned the favor and denied the Bennies' second shot. Senior captain Hannah Christian took the second attempt for the Cobbers. She skated to the right faceoff circle where she fired a shot that beat the goalie but pounded off the right post and away from goal. St. Ben's won the game with a goal on their third shot.
Both teams had 30 shots on goal for the three periods and overtime. Friese led Concordia with six shots and Maiah McCowan added five.
Macklin made 29 saves in goal for CC and is now 2-2-1 in her five starts.
