2 Unbeatens Entered, 1 Left

ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/20/21)--- Two undefeated teams entered, one left. Concordia scored three consecutive goals to start their game at Hamline and went on to cruise past the Pipers 3-1.

The Cobbers are now 1-0-1 on the season while Hamline falls for the first time and drops to 4-1-0. The victory avenges a pair of lopsided losses in Moorhead last year and snaps a 6-game losing streak against the Pipers.  

A single goal in the first period, two more in the second and then the goaltending of Kiana Flaig led to the Cobbers' first win of the year. Concordia scored their first three goals of the season and Flaig stopped 29 of the 30 shots she faced to keep her season goals against average under 0.50.      

Flaig helped Concordia survive and early-game flurry from Hamline. The Pipers put up three shots in the first five minutes of play but Flaig, who posted a shutout in the team's first game, was equal to the task and kept the score level at 0-0.

The Cobbers were rewarded for the hard-work play in the next two minutes. The Pipers took two penalties 29-seconds apart and CC took advantage of the 5-on-3 situation by scoring a power play goal at 5:38.

Senior captain Callie Fagerstrom scored the team's first goal of the year. Megan Mohr and Brenna Mjoness set up the goal – which was Fagerstrom's 17th goal of her career.

The teams skated to the first intermission without scoring another goal and Hamline held a 12-9 edge in shots on goal.

The game-winning goal came in the second minute of the second period. Senior Kaitlyn Page doubled the lead when she scored an even-strength goal at 1:03. Freshman Jerica Friese recorded her first college assist on the game winner. The tally was Page's 12th of her career.

Junior defensive player Hannah Christian scored the all-important "next goal" and gave Concordia a 3-goal lead in the final three minutes of the middle frame. Christian netted another power play goal after the Pipers were called for a roughing penalty at 15:59.

Jordie Egerdahl and McKenzie Oelkers were credited with the assists on the goal at 17:40.

The Cobbers then handed the game off to their defense and the skills of Flaig. Concordia also used a consistent offensive presence to protect the lead.  CC outshot Hamline 12-7 in the final 20 minutes of play.

The Cobbers kept the Pipers off the board until the 15:15 mark of the third period. The late goal busted up the shutout but was too late to start a comeback run.

Hamline finished with a slight 30-28 edge in shots on goal. The difference in the game came on the power play. CC was 2-for-5 with the extra player while HU was 0-for-5.
