46 Shots Not Enough
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (11/27/16)—Concordia threw everything they could at the Marian goal in the second game of their two-game non-conference series. The Cobbers put up 46 shots on goal but could never get anything behind goalie Lindsey Strainis and lost 1-0.
Concordia gave up a goal in the eighth minute of the first period and then buzzed the Sabres net for the remaining 52 minutes of the game and came away with only their second loss of the game.
The Cobbers have their two-game losing streak come to an end and are now 5-2-1 on the year. Strainis helps Marian end a two-game losing streak. The Sabres are now 3-5 on the season.
The game was played at a quick pace with the total time being under an hour and 50 minutes. There were only three penalties whistled in the game with CC being sent to the power play on two occasions. The third period did not feature a penalty and barely took over the 20 minutes on the game clock.
Marian scored the game-winning goal at 7:50 of the first period and then turned the game over to their sophomore netminder.
Concordia outshot the Sabres 10-7 in the first period and the shot difference would continue to grow in each subsequent period.
The Cobbers recorded 17 shots in the second period and then 19 shots in the third. CC would outshoot the Sabres by 10 in the middle frame and then 14 in the final stanza.
Concordia's best sustained chances in the game came late in the third period when they pulled goalie Andrea Klug with 1:08 left in regulation. The Cobbers had two great shots in the first 18-seconds of the 6-on-5 advantage and then Marian took a timeout with 50-seconds left in the third.
Concordia came out of the timeout and proceeded to fire five more shots in the final seconds but could never find the back of the net.
The Cobbers finished with a 46-19 edge in shots on goal. Senior Jess Nelson led CC with eight shots. Freshman Amanda Flemming had seven shots while Amber Schaack added six.
Klug made 18 saves for Concordia. Her one-goal allowed performance drops her season goals against average to 2.58.
SHOT STAT STUFF: Concordia's 46 overall shots are the second most of the season. The Cobbers had 56 shots in their 7-6 OT win against St. Benedict. The 19 shots in the third period are also second most of any single period this year. CC put up 20 in the second period in the same win vs. CSB.
SHOT STAT STUFF 2: The Cobbers lead the MIAC in shots on goal by a wide margin. Concordia has 289 shots in their eight games. The second-place team in the stat category has 237 shots. CC has two of the top four shot takers in the league. Senior Amber Schaack leads the MIAC with 47 shots and Jess Nelson is tied for fourth with 31.
SUDDENLY SCORELESS: The shutout marks the first time all season that Concordia has been held off the scoreboard. It also ends a streak of nine straight games that CC has scored in a game. The last time the Cobbers were shutout came in the final regular-season series of last year.
WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will return home and get back into conference play. The Cobbers will host St. Mary's on Friday, Dec. 1 and Saturday, Dec. 3 at the Moorhead Sports Center. The Cardinals are 3-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in MIAC play.
